One day, two of their fishermen, Jopoh and Jopah, caught something unusual with their nets. It was a large and heavy wooden chest. They opened it upon reaching the shore. The wooden chest was filled with fine pearls. Not knowing what to do with them, the fishermen brought them to Akiam the Wiseman.
"What shall we do with this?" Jopoh asked Akiam. "The pearls are so many that it is enough to give a pearl to each family. Then every one in Aman will become very rich."
"Throw the pearls back to the sea," Akiam the Wiseman told them.
"But, your reverence," Jopah replied, "are you not glad that the poor will finally be rich and happy?"
"There is an eternity of difference between being rich and being happy," Akiam nswered. "Although the people of Akiam are poor, they are happy because they love life for what it is and not for what it has. The people love one another for what they are and not for what they possess. When Aman will become rich, all of these will be reversed. Life will be loved for what it has, and people will be loved for what they possess. When this happens, our village will become the saddest, although we might be the richest."
Jupoh and Jopah obeyed. They threw the pearls back into the sea, and Aman remained happy and at peace.
