Filomena: It is hard to ignore your earnest quest. You may wish to directly contact Portuguese historians in Portugal. One organization is Instituto das Ciencias Socias e Estudos Ultramarinos. You tend to mistrust sources that you think are biased in your opinion. So you may be able to trust Portuguese historians and get them to answer your questions. Regarding your earlier posts, there is no tradition of "boat-loads" of Jews coming to Goa to settle nor of a land grab by Portuguese settlers as far as we Goans know. The Portuguese were traders and administrators and, yes, they had a mission to convert pagans. In Goa, they did not take away land from Goan bartcars who somehow managed to hold on to their lands. They took land for churches and built churches on top of destroyed temples but not for settlement.
Gilbert responds: To begin with I was delighted to see your post on this subject. Given the strong views you have expressed in the past on the inquisition in Goa, my reaction prior to reading your post is: She will provide us numbers to support your past views. But it was not to be the case! Anyhow thanks for the lead. But I could not access them. Your above post compared to your prior writings on this subject, suggest a change of heart. Perhaps Born-Again Christian? :=)) I thought you even wrote ...... about inquisition-compensation? My endeavor is not a personal challenge. Any Goan (and non-Goan) interested in the Inquisition in Goa can/should try to get those numbers and post it on the web. The immigration statistics to Goa over any decade will hurt no one and similar other statistics when placed in the proper context. I do not carry the burden on what the Portuguese did 450 years ago. Well sorry, for the impression you have of me. I do not mistrust sources that have facts and numbers. I have not even quibbled how these numbers were obtained. What I have questioned are long editorials that are unsupported by accompanying facts and data. I assuming you are following this thread. You are misquoting me! I did not state that there were "boat loads of Jews coming to Goa" I did not even mention there were "boat loads of crypto-Jews coming to Goa." So you have to review the statements and question those who made those statements and encourage them to substantiate their numbers. I tried to provide the geopolitical relations between the Portuguese vs. Muslim-Jewish relation in the 1500-1700. Now are you too going to personally attack David Goldstein and mistrust that source? :=)) ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
