BOTH GOA SEATS FOR CONGRESS: Both Lok Sabha seats in Goa have been allocated to the Congress Party As per the seat-sharing arrangement between the Congress, NCP and other allies. This was confirmed by state party president Luizinho Faleiro late last night. (GT) BJP KEEPS FAITH IN SHRIPAD, ANGLE: North Goa Member of Parliament and Union Minister of State for Finance, Shripad Naik, and South Goa MP Ramakant Angle will seek re-election from their respective constituencies. The decision of the State election committee was announced at a press conference by BJP president Rajendra Arlekar in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at the party headquarters in Panjim on March 5. (H) BALLOT BATTLE TURNS COSTLIER: Conducting a general election, they say, is a mammoth exercise involving huge money, manpower and machinery. And rightly so, if one takes a look into the poll preparation exercise currently underway in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. The South Goa parliamentary constituency-having 21 assembly segments-is a case in point. Rough estimates have put the total requirement as follows: 328 vehicles, 4300-odd polling staff, 1500 police personnel, while the total expense to conduct the poll is put at over rupees half a crore. (H) ASILO NURSE FOUND MURDERED: The body of Maria Jennifer Vaz (25), a nurse at Mapusa's Asilo Hospital, who was allegedly murdered, was found floating at the Rua da Ourem creek in Panjim on March 5. Maria, who hailed from Cortalim, had signed off duty on March 4, but she went missing thereafter. (H) COPS YET TO TRACE MISSING BRIDE: Police are still groping in the dark in tracing the 24-year-old bride, who disappeared into thin air from 26 February. It may be recalled the 24-year-old girl, who had legally wedded Dipesh Raikar (27), a goldsmith by profession, had allegedly gone to meet her fiancée. Since then her parents could not trace her. Finding the groom giving evasive replies, the girl's brother lodged a kidnapping complaint suspecting the accused. (GT) YOUTH SUCCUMBS TO BURN INJURIES: Mr Dilip Gaunker, aged 22, from Morpila, who had sustained burn injuries at home, died in the GMC, Bambolim. The deceased was lighting a kerosene lamp, when he sustained burn injuries. (NT) SHIGMO CAPTIVATES MARDOL: Eulogizing Goddess Mhalsa of Mardol, Shigmo festival began with a bang at Mardol yesterday with groups of Romtamell from adjoining villages. Thousands of enthusiastic onlookers lined up the streets cheering the participants as they dances to the beat of Dhol, Tashe, Samel, carrying banners of their respective deities and traditional Tarang on their shoulders. (GT) LANKA PASSPORTS MASTERMIND HELD: Janet Vaz of Cuncolim, the agent believed to have masterminded the forged passports of two Sri Lankan nationals, was arrested by Vasco police at Mumbai and was brought to the State on March 5. (H) FALL IN UREA SALES: Zuari Industries Limited, chief manager, liaison and sales, P Subba Rao, yesterday (Mar 5) expressed concern over the decline in fertilizers consumption in the State, specially urea during the last three years and said the company had initiated steps to increase the consumption. Subba Rao said that the sales had slumped from 12,248 metric tones during 1994-95 to 9,184 MT during 2002-2003. (GT) ONE ELECTED UNOPPOSED IN TALEIGAO: One candidate was elected unopposed while, it will be a straight fight in other five wards even as 29 candidates remained in the fray for the Taleigao panchayat elections slated on 14 March. Former sarpanch Santan Barreto was elected unopposed from ward II. He is learnt to be backed by Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio Monserrate. The straight fights will be between Anjali Naik and Geeta Naik in ward I, Elsa D'Cunha and Goretti Martins in ward III, Kushalaya Shirwaikar and Saraswati Murgaonkar in ward V, Jennifer Monserrate and Minguel Martins in ward VI, and Jennifer Mascarenhas and Wilma Cardozo in ward VIII. (GT) NO INFO CENTRE ON GOA: Since 2000, Goenkarancho Ekvot, a Delhi-based NGO, has been demanding that the Goa government set up an information centre with attached library, having literature pertaining to Goa. But the government has turned deaf to their demand, complained Suman Kurade, president of GE, at a press conference in Panjim on March 5. (H) LIFE-SAVING TRAINING: Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) training 25 unemployed youth from Goa in the art of first aid, life-saving and life-guarding at Bogmalo beach. The Society is a member of the International Life Saving Federation and a branch of Royal Life Saving Society (Commonwealth). Saldanha was speaking at 'Advise', an advertising seminar conceived by a group of Goa-based advertising agencies to disseminate information about the industry. (GT) SMOOTH SAILING FOR CRUISE LINERS SOON: Goa will soon receive a boost as a major cruise destination with plans on the anvil to simplify various bureaucratic procedures and ensure smooth sailing for cruise liners. The State is already included as part of the 'Indian Cruise Circuit'-which also includes Mumbai, New Mangalore, Cochin and Tuticorin-where the government is planning world-class cruise terminals. Meanwhile, yet another cruise liner will drop anchor at Mormugao on 8 February. The "MV Christopher Columbus", part of the Germany-based Hapang Lloyd fleet, will visit the state with 400 passengers, mostly Germany nationals. JM Baxi and Cox & Kings will be the shipping and ground-handling agents respectively. Politicians with IIT, FRCS, BBA or LLB degrees could have surely done better in harnessing a new technology with immense potential.We have computers scattered across students' homes across the State, but it's a million dollar question whether students are learning to use software to the optimum or even make the most of the Internet. We have 16,000-or even more-Internet subscribers in the State. But see how poorly and trouble-prone the services are, including by the main Internet Service Provider in the State, the BSNL.
