(GT) MINOR GANG-RAPED, MURDERED AT BETUL: Gloom descended on the fishing hub of Betul on March 7 afternoon after miscreants gang-raped a 10-year-old girl before strangulating her to death. Cuncolim police in a swift action arrested three of the alleged accused for rape and the cold-blooded murder. The gruesome incident occurred between 1.15 pm and 1.30 pm when the victim's father had gone out to neighbouring Cutbona jetty to procure their lunch packet. (H) GIRL KILLED; MUM, DAD INJURED: An eight-year-old girl, Nelisa D'Souza of Mapusa, was killed and two others were injured, one of them seriously when the motorcycle on which they were traveling collided against a roadside compound wall and went off the road at Panaji on March 7. Nelisa's father, Jerome, who was riding a Hero Honda Splendor, lost control over the bike and collided against a railing and went off the road, hitting an electricity pole, near the SBI, Mandovi branch. He has been admitted at the Goa Medical College Hospital for treatment. (GT) SCOOTERIST DIES: Sagar Chodankar, a 43-year-old resident of Mala, Panaji, died on the spot after being hit from behind and run over by a Kadamba Transport Corporation bus. Sagar, brother of police inspector Sandesh Chodankar, was proceeding from Panaji to Vasco on his scooter when the accident occurred on the Zuari bridge. (GT) QUEPEM MAN ARRESTED: Quepem police yesterday arrested one Santan Vaz aged 30 resident of Cotami, Quepem, for assaulting one Gulesino Menezes with a "coita". (NT) TELEPHONE CALLS GOT 'EM: The breakthrough in the detection of kidnapping and murder case of Supriya Lotlikar came after the police laid its hands on the detailed calls made by the accused to Rajeshree Tarikar on 26 February. As many as 20 to 25 calls were made between the accused Dipesh Raikar and Tarikar on 26 February. Some of the calls recorded were between 1 to 4 am. Incidentally, the same afternoon the accused has smothered Supriya and had dinner at the residence of Tarikar. (GT) REVERTING TELECOM RATES IN COLVALE: Union Minister of State for Finance, Shripad Naik has assured the Colvale villagers that the enhanced telecom rates will be reverted back, once a re-survey of population census is completed and added that the excess payments made by the telecom subscribers in this area will also be refunded. (H) COLOUR, FUN, FROLIC MARK PONDA HOLI: Holi, the festival of colours was celebrated with religious fervour and enthusiasm in Ponda. Ponda Kala and Krida Mandal comprising of a large group of revelers moved around the city sprinkling "Gulal" and coloured water on enthusiastic participants welcoming the festival. (GT) DISASTER MANAGEMENT PLAN: The Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum has urged the State government to prepare a disaster management plan in view of the accidents occurring in the residential areas situated along the National Highway. (GT) SORE OVER IRON ORE: Blocked roads, layers of mud accumulated everywhere, mining rejects spilled at some places along the roads, dust filled benches in schools, two-wheeler riders facing hell of a time negotiating the stretch. These are a part of the daily routine for residents of the mining belt. With a growing demand for iron ore pouring in from China, a spiraling demand to ferry this product has resulted in more trucks plying on the Usgao-Pale stretch. The highway remains blocked for a better part of the day. What has affected residents the most is the intolerable dust pollution caused by the relentless traffic. (GT) FOUNDATION FOR 2-LANE BRIDGE: The foundation for a 22.5 metre long two-lane bridge at Ribandar-Patto will be laid next week, with work order being issued to Venkat Rao and Company. The present bridge will be about 5 metres away from the existing small culvert, which has become weak over the years. A time limit of six months has been set to complete the construction estimated to cost Rs.2.6 crore. (GT) SPARKS FLY AT MERCES GRAM SABHA: The special gram sabha of the Merces panchayat was adjourned on 7 March after villagers strongly protested that the panchayat was attempting to present and pass the budget in a hurried manner. The meeting will now be held at 10.30 am on 14 March. (GT) GOA'S WOMEN: Given Goa's supposedly better position, compared to other Indian states at least, there's a lot of confusion over understanding the actual status of women here. Of course, Goa's women don't face the atrocities seen in less-enlightened parts. On the other hand, women's groups continuously point out that the woes of Goa's women are just misunderstood or swept under the carpet. (Edit in Herald) MARGAO'S PEOPLE-FRIENDLY POSITION: Margao is known as the commercial and cultural capital of Goa. The idea of its wealth could be gained by the fact that it ranked 52nd among 2,500 towns in India in terms of total bank deposits in 2002. The town is a perfect example of communal harmony and has been a leader in social and political reforms movements in the Goan history. The late Anant Narsinha Naik still remains as the most remembered, active, dynamic and influential post-liberation political personality from Margao. Out of the eleven invited artists, few have had their individual shows in the past few months and as such a couple of the works are re-exhibited.
