Police are yet to identify who the murderer is.Maria, who hailed from Cortalim, had signed off duty on Thursday around 8.30 pm. But, she went missing thereafter and her family had lodged a missing complaint with the Mapusa police after she failed to return home.
She should have reached home at Cortalim around 9.30 pm in the normal course but she hadn't, her family reported to the Mapusa police.The incident has shocked the Vaz' neighbourhood in Cortalim as well as the medical and para-medical staff at the Asilo hospital.
Meanwhile, the murder case has been registered by Panjim police who fished out the body from the Rua da Ourem creek. Police sources said the murder case under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code was registered based on the findings of the post-mortem report.
Although the post-mortem report said the death had been caused by drowning (asphyxia), it also detected neck and chest compression by the use of blunt force, thus indicating she had been "forcibly" drowned, police sources said.
Meanwhile, Panjim Police Inspector, Dinraj Govekar, who is conducting further investigations in the case, visited the site where Maria's body was fished out. Govekar was also accompanined by Superintendent of Police (North), Sharad Aggarwal, and Panjim DySP, Vaman Tari, who are supervising the investigations. ---------------------------------- HERALD 6/3/04 page 1 ----------------------------------
