Each country has a different word coined for 'Bribe'..
if we say 'Bakshish' in India, we say 'Hadia' in the gulf...... meaning
gift.

<What is the konkani word for the same.....is it Sagvad? Sagvad as we say in Salcette, is a basket full of local produce which was given to Regidors and batkars for favours granted. Sagvad can also be
sent as a wedding present.>

JC response:

Dear Eddiebab,

In the truest sense of the word Bakshish, your analogy (above) is accurate. There are many of us who say THANK YOU to others.

For example: If a family invites us over for dinner, we'd normally send flowers to the lady of the house. That is one way of saying THANK YOU......another is to send a nice Card.....and is optional.

May I suggest that the presently prevailing Bakshish demand in Goa is NOT optional.

It is more like PAY UP up front - or SALT yourself while waiting for matters to be handled. Matters like obtaining a birth certificate, driver's license, passport, permission to build a house, ration card, early surgery for emergent cases, telephone connection and electrical meter installation....etc

BTW: If you do wish to say Thank You to someone special in Goa, do remember to send that someone special ......an arrangement of flowers. It is something simple, but something which will bring a smile on that person person's face.

There are several places which offer this service. Ema and I use Beatrice Pinto's Goa Expressions.

They are good, efficient, inexpensive .....and you will be very happy with their service. I know that we have been.

here is more......please note....I am only providing information of a service which I strongly recommend to Goans abroad.....I am NOT advertising NOR do I expect any Bakshish, Monetary, Material or Verbal (;-) consideration from Beatrice's very helpful ghorcar Cecil Pinto !

I'd be disappointed if that were to occur.
