Briefing newsmen, Convenor NJT Arvind Bhatikar said the dharna will take place on Saturday between 10 am to 1 pm, wherein the NGOs will demand that the concerned authorities take immediate action on several issues related to corruption.
Alleging an unholy alliance between the builders and officials of the Margao Municipality, Bhatikar accused the civic official of being in league with building, thereby turning a blind eye to health hazard posed by overflowing soakpits.
"Yes, the Nitoll Jin Trust is serious in taking up the challenge posed by the builder's lobby", Bhatikar asserted while replying to a question. He said the Trust is demanding that action be initiated against the 200 multi-storeyed buildings identified two years ago as having violated the rules relating to set-backs and parking space.
"The Trust warns the municipality to take action against such builders within two months or face the wrath of the people", he said.
Pointing out that shops have come up over soakpits and septic tanks in the Gandhi market, Bhatikar demanded that the Margao Municipality should immediately remove these structures to ensure that sanitary facilities in the market are maintained properly.
Touching on the Borda road, he suspected a collusion between elected representatives, officials and contractors for undertaking sub-standard work.
Bhatikar accused the government for turning a blind eye to the corruption in RTO offices. "The present government, like others before it, has turned a blind eye to this corruption, for obvious reasons", he added. --------------------------------- HERALD 12/3/04 page 4 ---------------------------------
