Addressing a press conference in Panaji on March 12, Goa Foundation Convener Dr Claude Alvares stated that with the dismissing of the two applications filed by the Goa government, the leases granted by the government to about 40 mines in these areas will have to be cancelled. He said the government had failed to prove in the apex court that there were settlements, houses, cultivations and private property in these two areas. (GT) POLL 'SENSITIVE' AREAS TARGETTED AT US: CONG: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President, Luizinho Faleiro, on Friday cast doubts on the procedures followed by the State administration in identifying "sensitive" areas for the forthcoming Lok Saba elections. Addressing a press conference in Panjim, Mr Faleiro said a majority of the booths declared sensitive by the two district magistrates are in assembly segments represented by Congress MLAs. (H) TWO DEAD IN GHASTLY MISHAP: Two persons died on the spot while two others were seriously injured in an accident involving a truck and a mini bus at Bonbag on the Curti-Borim bypass road in Ponda on March 12. (GT) PRESSMAN'S FLAT BURGLED: Unknown culprits broke into the Campal flat of reputed photo-journalist Darryl Andrade, and decamped with Rs.60,000 in cash and jewelry worth Rs.10,000 in the wee-hours of Thursday. The culprits gained entry into the ground-floor flat located near the Bal Bhavan by breaking open the window grill. The flat was unoccupied and locked on Thursday-Friday night. (H) BOY KNOCKED DOWN FATALLY: In a hit a run case, a four-year-old boy, Shivraj A Chari, was knocked down fatally by an unidentified motorcycle near Sao Jose de Areal on March 12 evening. (H) ILLUMINATION OF TOURIST SPOTS: The expenditure incurred by the Tourism department for illuminating the front side of the main building of Raj Bhavan, at Dona Paula, during the period from February 2003 to February 2004, stands third in the list of illuminations carried out by the departments, for roads, sites of tourist interest, temples and churches, during the same period. The total illumination cost incurred by the department for the period from February 2003 to February 2004 is Rs.57.97 lakh. Thousands of people from all walks of life and irrespective of caste and creed thronged the historic village to pay obeisance to the deity Shantadurga Kuncolllikarin which was taken out from Fatorpa temple around noon . The huge process with the palkhi of the deity wended its way from Fatorpa via the traditional route and made several halts for people to offer prayers. (H) SPECIAL TRAINS TO HALT AT PERNEM: The Konkan Railway has decided to provide a halt at Pernem for 176/168 Dadar Terminus-Mangalore Summer Special. The 176 Dn Dadar special train will reach Pernem at 23.38 hrs and depart at 23.40 hr. The 168 UP Mangalore-Dadar special will reach Pernem at 1657 hrs and depart at 1659 hrs. Besides the Daybreakers, the music has also been provided by Marshall Rose. Another CD brought out by Fausto da Costa's Dinfa Productions is titled "Alleluia! Praise the Lord". It contains a total of 24 songs. This album has its programme and concept done by Augustine de Souza. (H) EXPORTING THE BEST? In a State which has stagnated over the centuries, and where the gap between aspiration and opportunity keeps growing greater, it isn't much of a surprise that Goa keeps being afflicted by migration of the sons and daughters of the State. It is almost as if the best and the brightest are destined to continue leaving this small land, sometimes returning back in the evening of their lives to spend the last days in a place they once called home and more suited to their pace after the end of an active working life.
