The highest polling 76.11 per cent was recorded in ward IV while lowest 52.63 per cent in ward VI where Jennifer Monserrate, wife of Town and Country Planning Minister Babush Monserrate is pitted against Miguel Martins in a straight fight. (GT) POLITICIANS WORK UP GOOD HUMOUR: Forgetting their differences, the politicians helped in keeping a good Shigmo crowd entertained for nearly two hours at the Lok Adalat organised by Panaji Shigmotsav Samiti at Azad Maidan on March 14. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, NCP Goa chief Dr Wilfred de Souza, Congress Legislature Party spokesman and MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu, veteran MGP leader, Dr Kashinath Jhalmi, Radharao Gracias of UGDP and Radhika Naik of Janata Party participated in the mock court programme.Denying that a fight between Monte Cruz and Churchill Alemao would help the BJP candidate, Gracias said Churchill was the church on the hill while the former was the cross on the hill. Though the response for the floats competition was rather low, with only around 12 floats participating, fancy dress, romtamel and fugadi competition also delighted the crowd, which was not so big as witnessed during the Carnival parade this year. Most of the floats depicted the religious scenes which were appealing to the eye, as they wore colourful lights and themes of religious mythology. (H) 'UNSERVICEABLE' VEHICLES: Around 312 vehicles (belonging to the State) that have been termed 'unserviceable' and are lying as junk, many in the open and some in garages. Two of them are reportedly lying at Delhi. It is learnt that many of these vehicles were put up for auction. But there were no bidders for the same. (H) TAP WATER EMITS FOUL ODOUR: Chaos and confusion in Mangor Hill, on March 14 evening when tap water drawn from the Selaulim pipeline emitted foul odour. (GT) PANCHAYATS IN THE NEWS: Taleigao is unusual. Thanks to former minister Somnath Zuwarkar, it was first dragged into the City Corporation of Panaji. Equally abruptly, the incumbent government opted to oblige (BJP minister Atanasio "Banush") Monserrate, and make Taleigao a panchayat again. No explanations were given why other areas outside Panjim, with similar conditions and similar demands, could not be treated similarly. The politics of the place, the intense involvement of lobbies and the particular relationships politicians from this area have had with the ruling party, all go to make this an unusual village panchayat. (Edit in Herald) POPULAR SUPPORT NEEDED FOR SUCCESS OF IFFI: IFFI was not the Chief Minister, Mr Parrikar's idea. It was an offer from the government of India and Mr Parrikar accepted it in good faith just as he strongly and successfully lobbied for a centrally funded convention centre and got it sanctioned in the latest central budget. The opposition parties in Goa had no sporting spirit to welcome this decision. Why should culturally creative and talented Goans oppose the IFFI? If there is a fear of cultural pollution then they should first convince the villagers in coastal Bardez to stop patronizing the foreign tourists.
