MINORITIES URGED TO VOTE FOR ANGLE: The Bharatiya Janata Party yesterday (March 15) urged minority communities, specially from Salcete taluka, to bury all the differences with the BJP and vote their South Goa candidate to victory with thumping majority. Speaking at a well attended meeting organized by the BJP Minority Morcha at Vidhya Bhuvan, Margao, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the unity between different religions in Goa goes back decades and to break it is beyond political power. (GT) TOURIST LEAPS TO DEATH: An Indian tourist, identified as Rajiv, is suspected to have jumped three floors from a Panjim hotel and died in the wee hours of March 15. (H) BID TO ROB MAPUSA JEWELLER FOILED: Two armed men made an abortive bid to rob a jewllery shop belonging to Sandip Lotlikar, and situated in the heart of Mapusa municipal market on March 15 evening. While one of the accused managed to escape, the other was nabbed thanks to the courage exhibited by the owner of the jewllery shop. According to information provided by the police, two young men armed with a cleaver and a revolver entered Shop 35 'Shoba Jewellers' at about 7.30 pm, when the owner was in the process of closing his shop. (H) NEW JUSTICES TO TAKE CHARGE TODAY: newly sworn-in justices Nelson Britto from Cuncolim and Avinash P Lawande from Panaji will take charge today. The swearing in ceremony took place at Mumbai yesterday evening. While Justice Britto is posted at Goa, Justice Lawande has been posted on the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court. With justices Britto and Lawande being elevated to the High Court, the number of Goan justices in Bombay High Court has touched the figure four, the previously posted justices being Justice Ferdino Rebello also from Cuncolim, and RMS Khandeparkar from Panaji. (GT) ATANASIO'S PANEL SWEEPS POLLS: Taleigao panchayat became a unique grassroot body sans any opposition as the Taleigao Progressive Development Front backed by Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio Monserrate made a clean sweep claiming all the 11 seats at stake after counting of votes yesterday. While one of its candidates, Santan Barreto was earlier elected unopposed from Ward II, one of the key contests involved Monserrate's wife Jennifer, who defeated Minguel Martins in a straight fight in ward VI. (GT) GOA'S UNDISCOVERED BIRDS: I've settled in Candolim, a small cottage in a large compound with all kinds of tress, big and small. One fine day, as I was relaxing in the balcao, a Golden Oriole dropped down to the lower branches of a mango tree to say hello; a female koel-all brown-spotted and red-eyed-would crash regularly in the bushes, barbets would be going kutoor-kutoor all day (there's even a Konkani song which goes "Kukoo, ku-ku-ru-ku-kooo". I discovered a Brahminy Kite nesting in a large tree behind the house; there's a large Red Wattled Lapwing nesting site in an abandoned field a 100 metres away. And, well, intrigued, I decided to explore the Candolim hill. There were Heart-Spotted Woodpeckers on the slopes, all kinds of Babblers babbling away on thickly forested slopes. So many birds, in fact, that it took me about a full year to really discover all the birds hanging around in my area. (Joseph Zuzarte in Herald) BLESSED BY NATURE: The lush green paddy fields on both the sides of the state highway add beauty to the sweet and cool breeze blowing down on the village from the swaying trees on the mountainsides. This is Quepem, an ideal place where one can relax specially during the summer season. The water which flows through the canal from Quepem, to the neighbouring villages, helps boost agricultural production which makes the farmers of this area a happy lot and sustains vegetation.Quepem taluka, which is mostly covered by the thick forests, has in all 11 panchayats, besides the Quepem municipality. The municipal area is surrounded by Xeldem village towards the south. (Roque Dias in NT) THE IFFI-TISING OF PANAJI: While the machinery of government is concentrated on trying to meet the deadline for the IFFI in December 2004, the more serous concerns of the citizens of Panaji remain neglected. Panaji remains the malaria capital of India. It does not mitigate the suffering of its citizens to proclaim that "migrant workers are responsible" for the alarming increase in the incidence of malaria in Goa. Water supply is inadequate and unpredictable. For many years, the sewage treatment plant at Tonca has been non-functional and raw sewage has been allowed to flow untreated into the Mandovi river.
