Eighteen bishops, including two Cardinals Cardinal Ivan Dias and Cardinal Emiritus Simon Pimenta and about 300 priests are scheduled to attend the ceremony which will be held indoors in the Se Cathedral. An outdoors pandal will also be erected to seat around 8000 people who will be able to view the ceremony on about 50 close-circuit televisions.
Addressing a press conference at the Bishops House, Altinho, the Director of the Diocesan Centre of Social Communications Media, Fr Olavo Pereira said that Rev Ferrao will be only the second Indian to be installed as Archbishop of Goa and Daman and Patriarch of East Indies. The first was his predecessor, Rev Raul Gonsalves. Todays press conference was also addressed by the Co-ordinator, and the co-coodinator of the organising committee for the installation, Fr Ligorinho Dcosta and Fr Aleixo Menezes respectively. The installation ceremony, to be presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Rev Quintana and the outgoing Archbishop Rev Gonsalves, will have the latter welcoming the new Archbishop and the Chancellor reading the appointment letter. The Nuncio will then say an introductory prayer and make the new Archbishop sit on his Episcopal seat followed by Rev Gonsalves putting the crozier (Episcopal staff) in the new Archbishops hands. After the whole congregation congratulates the new Archbishop, representatives of different sections of the church clergy, religious, lay people will place their hands into the hands of Archbishop Ferrao and offer their allegiance to him and promise him their collaboration. The new Archbishop will then proclaim his acceptance of the new episcopal charge. Fr Pereira said, The installation ceremony is integrated in the Holy Sacrament of the Mass. We have organised it such that everything is over by 12.30 p.m. The ceremony will include sentiments of gratitude to Archbishop Gonsalves, whose 26-year-long service to the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman comes to an end with the installation ceremony. Fittingly, the ceremony will also include Rev Gonsalves parting message to the Archdiocese. He was consecrated Bishop in 1967, served as the Apostolic Administrator of Goa and Daman from 1972 to 1977 and was appointed as Archbishop Patriach in 1978. When asked about the significance of the choice of date for the installation, Fr Pereira said that in the current penitential season of lent, Sunday the 21st March is liturgically a Sunday of Joy, wherein some rejoicing is allowed. - Forwarded by www.goa-world.com (Gaspar Almeida) ===== Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter since 1994 is moderated by [EMAIL PROTECTED]@R @LMEID@, Associate goa-world.com & presented by Ulysses Menezes, Owner goa-world.com website.
