'Sunday of Joy' was also the day of rejoining for the archdiocese of Goa and Daman as Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana, installed the Archbishop-designate in his episcopal seat. Outgoing Archbishop Raul Gonsalves handed over the crozier (Episcopal staff) to his successor at the ceremony preceding the Eucharistic celebration. The biggest church in Asia reverberated to the clapping of the congregation. (GT) ARCHBISHOP FERRAO INSTALLED: Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao was installed as the 34th Archbishop of Goa and Daman at a solemn ceremony held at the Se Cathedral at Old Goa. Archbishop Ferrao is the second Goan to head the Roman Catholic church in Goa and Daman succeeding Archbishop Raul Nicolau Gonsalves, who has now retired. (H) REV FERRAO TAKES CHARGE AS ARCHBISHOP: The Most Reverend Filipe Neri Ferao was installed as the new Archbishop of Goa and Daman, Primate of the East and the Patriarch of the East Indies in the Se Cathedral, Old Goa, today (March 21) morning in a ceremony full of pomp and reverence. Rev Ferrao (51) who served as Auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese for the last 10 years, was installed as the new Archbishop by the Vatican's Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Rev Pedro Lopez Quintana in the presence of outgoing archbishop Rev Raul Gonsalves. Eighteen bishop in golden vestments from all over India, including two Cardinals-Cardinal Ivan Dias (Mumbai) and Cardinal Emeritus Simon Pimenta-and over 300 priests attended the ceremony. The Se Cathedral was packed to capacity with people from all over Goa. The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, graced the occasion towards the end and sat for over an hour before congratulating the new Archbishop with a bouquet of flowers. (NT) CHURCH SHOULD UNITE EVERYBODY: Outgoing Archbishop Raul Gonsalves expressed the hope that the Church would bring about the communion of all communities. He was speaking at the function to felicitate Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao at Old Goa after his installation. He said he was content that he was able to implement at least some of the recommendations made by the Synod last year. He termed the new Archbishop as a gift from God. (GT) NCP-CONGRESS DEAL HAS MGP IN A FIX: With the North Goa seat going to the NCP, the hopes of MGP of contesting as nominee of the 'grand alliance' against the BJP in the April 26 Lok Sabha elections and thereby reviving its status have been dashed. "We were given to understand that the North Goa seat would be given to us," admitted the MGP chief Shashikala Kakodkar. (H) TOURIST GUIDE STABBED: Jimmy Lourenco, a tourist guide, was seriously injured after he was attacked by three persons near the Dr Ambedkar garden, Panaji, yesterday evening. According to information available, the assailants attacked Lourenco with a knife after he refused to withdraw a police complaint lodged against one Oliveira. (GT) BODY FOUND: A German national was found dead in a guest house at Vasavaddo, Benaulim, on March 21. The Colva police said that he was staying in the guest house for some time. (NT) CRACKDOWN ON CARS WITH TINTED GLASSES: The south Goa police have booked over 203 cases against car owners having tinted glasses beyond the prescribed standards. (GT) PROBE INTO IMMIGRATION VIOLATION: Investigations into the deportation of the Punjabi from Amsterdam seem to be clearly pointing out lapses on the role played by the immigration authorities. These lapses seem to have come to light after a day-long investigation that was carried out in the presences of top police brass of the Goa police on Sunday morning. (GT) PROJECT TO ELEVATE WATER TABLE: A pilot project to elevate the water table is to be undertaken in Mandrem to overcome the problem of water scarcity in summer months. It is learnt that the project will be launched jointly the Irrigation & Agriculture Department, and the Forest and Environment Departments. (GT) DUO HELD FOR ABUSING PRIEST: A 60-year-old woman and her 30-year-old son were arrested by Colva police, late Sunday evening, for allegedly abusing a priest at Orlim and also for breach of peace. The incident occurred in the morning after the Sunday mass, wherein the woman is alleged to have accosted the priest on account of right of a pathway, which the police said did not exist. MORMUGAO: Margao may be considered the commercial capital of Goa, but the nucleus of the South Goa parliamentary segment inevitably has to be Mormugao as an airport, harbour, railway terminus, defence establishments such as Coat Guard and Indian Navy, major installations for fuel, container service, shipyards and other spheres of activity are all located here. Though a plan at one time to make it the capital of Goa during the Portuguese regime failed, it was a well-planned town, prior to the rapid development which changed its character due to large-scale immigration and a boom in construction. (GT) WATER CONSERVATION AS PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT: March 22 happens to be the commemoration day of Nova Goa designated by the Royal Charter of 1843, when Panaji got the status of a full-fledged city. March 22 is also World water Day.Water is an integral commodity of history, culture and economy. If Panaji were not to have two good springs-at the foot of the Altinho hillock--then it would not have been developed as a capital city. Because the first human settlements during the pre-Portuguese period were established near these springs. Both these springs supplied plentiful freshwater to the ships. But this is no excuse for turning a blind eye to that company's financial affairs. Last year itself, the total losses of the KRCL was Rs.323 crore. By September 2003, the KRCL had a huge total debt of Rs.4490 crore, both by way of Bonds and interest-free loans from the Indian Railways. Simon Smith of Jersy in UK, a mast sand sculptor, is one such tourist and his sand castles at Palolem are being put to an unusual use-a collection of funds for a primary school in the area. "I got into this art of sculpting after I discovered six years back that I had cancer and was in immediate need of surgery and chemotherapy treatment," recalls Smith.
