Marlon: I am sure if you are willing to pay for this service, you can hire a researcher or academic to gather the necessary information for you.
I am surprised that Gilbert would want to back peddle or feign ignorance on this issue. It is very well established that many churches were built over destroyed temples. As another example to Alfred's list, one should make a visit to the Divar temple, oops church. What is interesting here is that some portions of the cemetery area still contains remnants of the Hindu temple that used to stand there. Another revisionist history project? Response: Many requests are being made to increase the participation on the Goanet. Also Posts are being made to request to place Goan books on the internet. Is there is a disconnect between our writings and reality? Pardon me! My requests to look for history from Goan authors should have been taken with pride by Khoro-Niz Goenkars. But not to be! Someone quotes a book; but when requested to post more information from the same book, we get long Goenchi kaneos. This suggest the person does not have the book. I love that. :=)) As regards the Divar church, Lino Leitao made a MORE SPECIFIC WRITTEN DOCUMENTED REFERENCE to the start of this church (not some old grandmother's story).:=)) Here was my response to his post. >Hi Lino, >Thanks for the original posting and for the translation. I hope you do not >take my evaluation of this document personally. I am commenting on the >writing of Martires do Thana, published in Goa, 14 of Oct, 1927 and not >your reproduction. >Clearly the account by Martires do Thana was written 386 years after the >event (building of the original chapel). Can we honestly rely on the >veracity of this ten-generation hand-me-down account? Also the account does >not state that the pagoda was destroyed and the church was built. The land >could be an abandoned piece of property where the owners to escape military >conflict fled the area (very likely in 1510 or during Muslim rule) and the >building was in ruins and land deserted. >I just happened to be reading today's New York Times (Sat. March 20). Front >page news article is "Writer's Work in USA Today is called False"! And of >course we know it is false because THE CURRENT ACCOUNTS that are reported >by this "star foreign correspondent" never happened. That's why one needs more than one source or else one gets a 'Babri Masjid'.
