Speaking to reporters at Chief Electoral Office, Altinho, Election Commissioner BB Tandon said the decision had been taking following complaints from opposition parties about violation of the model code of conduct. The North Goa Collector who was to retire on superannuation of age in September 2003 had been granted an extension for a period of one year. (GT) TWIN MURDER ROCKS ANJUNA: In a shocking incident reported at Anjuna yesterday, a 25-year-old woman and 2-year-old girl were murdered on Tuesday (March 23). The residents in the area saw the victims and two men proceeding to the hillock that separates the flea market from Dando vaddo. Later they noticed the men assaulting the woman with a stone but when they rushed to the spot the men disappeared. The body of the girl was only found yesterday about 100 metres away from where the woman was assaulted. The child has been strangulated. (GT) RAPIST BEATEN TO DEATH: In Pernem on Tuesday (March 23) an irate crowd beat a migrant worker to death, because he had raped a teenager and a woman. The man, identified as Chanamma, was allegedly inebriated when he chanced upon a 15-year-old girl, who he raped first. It is then alleged that he turned his attention to a 50 year-old neighbour of the girl. Alerted by the screams of the women, a crowd gathered and started assaulting the rapist who was seriously injured when the police arrived. He succumbed to his injuries at the GMC. (GT) EDC SUBSIDIARY'S MD SUSPENDED: Managing Director of Goa Antibiotic Ltd, a subsidiary of EDC, has been placed under suspension in connection with a financial fraud. Managing Director of EDC, PS Reddy, when contacted, confirmed that GAPL's MD SV Vernekar has been suspended by him pending inquiry. GAPL is located at the Tuem Industrial Estate in Pernem. (H) EC TO PROBE ISSUE OF 'MEMO' ON SPYING: Even as the Election Commission of India has decided to seriously consider the demand of the opposition parties to reschedule the Lok Sabha polls, it will conduct an independent inquiry into all aspects of the issue of a 'memo' on spying of political parties in Goa. (GT) UNCERTAINLY CONTINUES OVER N GOA ALLIANCE CANDIDATE: Nationalist Congress Party chief, Sharad Pawar, on Wednesday said his party's nominee will contest the North Goa seat on the 'clock'; symbol in alliance with the Congress, even as uncertainty continued over the North Goa alliance candidate.."I can say for sure that there is no alliance with the MGP," Pawar said. (Jyoti Dhond in GT) POLICE CHASE VAN DRIVER TO RECOVER PISTOL: Panjim police recovered a country-made pistol in the jurisdiction of the Old Goa Police Station after they chased a Maruti van when its driver tried to evade a night patrolling checkpoint in the wee hours of Wednesday. Three persons including the drive of the van, one Anthony Fernandes alias Anton Poder, have been arrested and handed over to the Old Goa police. (H) STUDENT THRASHED FOR ANSWERING IN KONKANI: Though corporal punishment is banned under law, a teacher in Balli, Margao, has reportedly beaten up a child. This has been highlighted and strongly condemned by the Children's Rights in Goa. According to sources, a Kannada teacher allegedly beat up the Std III child since he answered a question in Konkani. Misunderstanding the answer, the teacher mercilessly beat the child, it is alleged. (GT) WAY OF THE CROSS AT ANJUNA: The penitential Way of the Cross will be held on March 26, at the Miraculous Cross, Anjuna Hill, at 4 pm and will be followed by mass. The devotees will proceed to the Miraculous Cross in a procession which will begin at the foot of the Hill. (H) NIGHT VIGIL AT BATIM: Night charismatic vigil will be held on March 26, at Maina-Batim Cancim Hill at St Simon & St Jude church at 8 pm. The vigil will commence with the Holy Rosary and will conclude with a Mass at 5 am. (H) PENITENTIAL SERVICE AT MAPUSA: The penitential service at Khorlim Cross, Mapusa, popularly known as Dongravelo Khuris, will take place on March 26. The procession will leave St Jerome's Church, Mapusa, at 4 pm. (H) CAMPAL STADIUM NO MORE! Even as football lovers in the city (Panaji) and adjoining areas had petitioned the government to reconsider its decision to demolish the Campal stadium for a temporary auditorium (for the IFFI), the work of razing this nearly 40-year-old structure is progressing at a fast pace. The stands on three sides have been nearly demolished and only the retaining wall around the stadium, which once hosted the prestigious Bandodkar Trophy, remains. (GT) AHOY! BRITISH WARSHIP: British Naval warship HMS Gloucester, a Type 42 Guided Missile Destroyer, will visit Goa from 26 March to 9 April, prior to conducting joint exercises with the Indian and French navies in the Arabian Seas. This is the first time that a British warship has joined this Indo-French exercise, and marks a significant shift towards a more multi-national dimension in joint training by the Indian Navy. (H) EXPECT HOT SUMMER: Yet another blistering summer is in store with temperatures expected to inch towards the 40 degrees Celsius mark by the beginning of April, according to the Indian Meteorological Department in Pune.
