According to Anjuna police, some villagers had noticed two men and a woman along with a child proceeding to a hillock at about 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
A short while later, some foreigners heard screams and rushed to the site only to see the woman being assaulted by the two men. They tried to nab the culprits, who however managed to flee from the scene under the cover of darkness.
The foreigners then alerted Anjuna police, who rushed to the site. The woman, however, died of injuries while being shifted to the Asilo hospital, here.
On Wednesday morning, when a police team visited the scene for purpose of investigations, the police noticed the body of a two-year-old boy, lying about 100 metres from the place where the woman was found.
An autopsy on the two bodies established that while the woman died of head injuries caused by some blunt force, the child was strangulated to death.
Anjuna Police Inspector, Lawrence D'Souza informed Herald that the police will register a case of murder (Section 302) against unidentified persons, who have committed the gruesome crime, on completion of preliminary investigations.
Meanwhile, police has requested the public to provide information which would help in establishing the identity of the woman and her child. The woman is about 5.3 feet in height and was wearing a yellowish printed saree and a cream-coloured blouse. The child was wearing a blue-coloured Reebok baby suit. PI D'Souza is investigating the case. ------------------------------------ HERALD 25/3/04 page 1 ------------------------------------
