Two days ago, Election Commissioner BB Tandon had asked the State government to immediately replace SS Keshkamat as the district collector and returning officer of the Lok Sabha elections for the North Goa constituency as he was on extension of service. (H) EC PROBE TEAM COMING: A two-member committee headed by Dr PC Kapoor, Secretary (Health), Government of India, is arriving in Goa tomorrow (March 28) to hold an independent inquiry into the episode of spying on opposition members in the State. (GT) PANJIM FEELS THE PINCH AFTER TALEIGAO DELINKS: The delinking of Taleigao from the jurisdiction of Panjim seems to have cost the Corporation of the City of Panaji dearly. The loss has been calculated at approximately Rs.1 crore. This was clearly indicated in a balanced budget presented and approved by the Corporation for the year 2004-5. Last year the PMC had presented a Rs.11.75 crore budget. This year, however, the budget revenue and expenditures have been balanced to the tune of Rs.10.46 crore. (H) HEATED DEBATE WITNESSED AT CCP MEET: The meeting of the first Budget Estimates of the Corporation of City of Panaji for 2004-05 witnessed a heated debate over various issues besides the budget. Two councilors, Ms Patricia Pinto and Ms Ruth Furtado, raised questions over why the Corporation should shoulder the burden of making payments to architects engaged by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation for the work of the International Film Festival of India when GSIDC had kept the Corporation completely in the dark over IFFI project. The state-of-the-art vessel will remain in port for a fortnight before hading out to sea to participate in Exercise "Varuna". (GT) TALEIGAO SARPANCH, DY ELECTED: Jannu Mahadev Rosario and Elsa D'Cunha were unanimously elected as sarpanch and deputy sarpanch respectively of Taleigao panchayat on March 26. Jannu's name was proposed by Jennifer Monserrate, wife of Town and Country Planning Minister and Taleigao MLA Atanasio Monserrate and seconded by Candid Dias. (H) USE PHONES TO WIN OVER VOTES: For the next few weeks, the usual "Hello" in a phone call could well be followed by "Vote BJP". The IT-savvy Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, has now requested party workers to phone friends and relatives residing in other parts of South Goa and to convince them to vote the BJP candidate to power. "Tell them that you and many others have decided unanimously to vote BJP and see that your relative or friend votes for the BJP. Take care that the phone call does not exceed three minutes," was the chief minister's advice to BJP activists at their Ponda poll office. (H) ELECTORAL NAMES NOW ON WEBSITE: If you want to check whether your name exists on the electoral roll or not, then log on to www.electionsgoa.nic.in The website was launched by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Goa, on March 26. The important feature of the website is that the entire electoral roll of Goa is available on it in PDF format allowing everyone to access the roll on the click of the mouse. (H) BMC'S RECOVERY DRIVE: Bicholim Municipal Council has launched a recovery drive by which it has earned a revenue of Rs.25 lakh this year. (H) VINTAGE CAR RALLY: Mangalore Motor Sports Association and the Goa Autosports Association will jointly organize a Vintage & Classic Car rally named "Make Old Age a Smile Age" for the first time in Goa on April 4. MMSA president Sudhir BK said, "The event will showcase about 40 vintage cars. Goa's vintage car collectors Pradeep Naik, Krishna Kumar Agarwal, Narcinva Naik, Rajesh Timblo will also display their collection consisting of Mercedez Benz, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Austin, Peugeot, Ford. The cars will be displayed for public viewing at Nehru Stadium on April 4 from 9 am to 10 am. Cars manufactured before 1961 are only eligible to participate in the event. Only 50 vehicles will be accommodated. (H) GKA SEMINAR: Goa Konkani Akademi is organizing a one-day seminar on "Women's expression in Konkani Literature" on March 27, at the Art Gallery of Institute Menezes Braganza between 9.30 am to 5.30 pm. The seminar will be inaugurated by Dr Archana Kakodkar, ex-documentation officer of Goa University and ex-librarian of Goa Legislative Assembly. Dr Kakodkar will also inaugurate a small book exhibition of Konkani women writers at the venue of the seminar. (H) TIATR WRITING WORKSHOP AT KA: The tiatr script writing workshop organized by Kala Mogi, Candolim, in collaboration with Kala Academy, will be inaugurated by Pundalik Naik, president of Goa Konkani Akademi and a prolific drama script writer on March 28 at 10 am at the Kala Academy's black box in Panjim. Besides Mr Naik, Wilmix, Anil Kumar and Tomazinho Cardozo will guide the participants of the workshop. (H) ANOTHER BRITISH VESSEL TO ARRIVE: Yet another British naval ship "HMS Exeter" is expected to call on the Mormugao port in April. The 266-strong crew, with commanding officer Commander Mark Durkin at the helm, will visit several destinations to fly the UK flag in a five-nation defence diplomacy mission. (H) LEGAL JOURNAL: Publisher and supplier of legal books and journals, Valsad Book House, has started a new publication of journals known as "Goa Law Reporter". The journals would be released every month from January 2004 onwards. Judgements passed by Goa Bench of Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court judgements arising out of the decision from the Goa Bench of High Court would be reported in the monthly journal. (H) HOSTEL FOR MLAS: The Porvorim plateau will soon have a hostel, complete with all the facilities, for local MLAs as well as the members of the legislative assemblies from other states, who visit Goa. The work on the project would commence soon after the inauguration of the ambitious Secretariat project, in September. (NT) CHANGING PANJIM: It's out there in the news. This Goan lad, who is originally from Carmona and has served the Royal Navy for 16 years, was eagerly awaiting the vessel's visit to the State.Carvalho, who obliged a section of the media with an interview in fluent Konkani with a British accent, spoke about his induction into the Royal Navy.
