The Portuguese are coming

BY CONSTANTINO HERMANNS XAVIER

FOR OVER 40 years Portuguese tourists were be ing viewed as a rare species in Goa. In 1997 only 630 Portuguese tourists visited Goa, against over 25 000 Germans who chose Goa as their destination. Numbers have gone up in the last few years, but are still comparatively low when confronted with the potential of exploring Portugal as a tourist source for Goa.

Now, things seem to be heading for a change as a delegation from the Goa Tourism Department visited Lisbon's International Fair and promised direct charter flights connecting Lisbon and Goa. The priority has been to move away from a low-budget tourism but it should be noted that it is not enough to focus on new countries be it Russia now or Portugal in the future. Low-budget and noisy tourists are found in every country.

It is apparent that the present day Portuguese don't have as much attachment
to Goa, as they did 40 years ago. It was just one small colony that they lost in 1961.
They lost even bigger ones thereafter.

I don't think that Goa had to go appealing to the Germans to visit us. Germany has
been the most affluent country in Europe and that, paved the way for more Germans
to visit Goa.
