FN > > > Goa and the Blue Mountains:Or, Six Months of Sick Leave > by Richard Francis Burton, Dane Kennedy (Introduction) > > List Price: $24.95 ====================================== Folks,
Two aspects of Burton's book may also be worth mentioning: 1. The word "Goanese" is attributed to Richard Burton as the first recorded occurrence is in this book. Burton was a linguist par excellence and he must have had reasons for coining the term the way he did. He was possibly influenced by the Portuguese original, "Goeses" and is unlikely to have intended it in a pejorative way as in the book he refers to a "Goanese noble" BTW The Oxford English Dictionary cites the first recorded use of the word "Goan" to be in a book of poetry written by Jose Furtado called "A Goan Fiddler" and published by Chapman & Hall in 1927. However, I have a copy of "The Goan Cook's Guide" by Pedro Damiao Dias, 1904 ( 194 pages, B.X. Furtado, Bombay). Has anyone come across an earlier reference to the use of the word "Goan" or ant reference to the first edition and what it was called? 2. Amazon has the first few (10) pages of the Burton book viewable at their site (http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0520076117/ref=sib_dp_pt/102-5134220-546334 1#reader-page). Fred Noronha wrote that Penguin India has a new (Feb. 2004) reprint of the book for Rs 250 and that this is a quarter of the US price. There is also a 1991 AES (India) reprint at Rs 145. Further, there are two current US reprints available - 1992 Univ of California Press, $55 (list) and 2001, Lightning Source Inc., $14.95. However, If it is the original (1851), you are after, a Canadian dealer has a copy for US$ 3,400 - see http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookSearch If someone else has beaten you to it, I might be tempted to sell you my copy at a small premium :-) Cheers, Eddie Fernandes ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
