What Brian Antao says about one publication, which happens to be Goan Observer, is very much true. The writing is often slanderous, malicious and madness. In Goa, I read few issues of GO which I have brought them to Dubai for further reading. But I have not been able to re-read them because of the Holy Week services and other work. I am not sure if I could get time to re-read before leaving for Canada which could happen anytime now. I hope to express my views on the political writing of Rajan Narayan. I discussed Rajan's writing with some local journalists, including one very senior scribe. I was told that Rajan's style is welcomed by people who like such strong language that often lies periously close, if not indeed, to being termed malicious. One part-time journalist, who does other things for living including campaigning for Churchill, who writes for GO seems to be in awe of Rajan. If such writing made Herald a must-read paper, I believe Rajan is trying to do the same with GO. People like muck-rakers, and it's a known fact that both Blitz and Current became successful for indulging in such stuff. But both Blitz and Current were also known for in-depth investigative reporting. The other important point that made these weeklies hot cakes were their inter-paper rivalry. Both papers took pot-shots at each other at every opportunity. The tough and bitter fight for circulation and to be one-up against each other was the other reason for these papers to be widely read and debated. Maybe GO fills the gap left by weeklies such as The Goa Post, though I am not sure if the Post was in the same mould as GO.
