In the morning Dr P K John, Director of Fire Services and other officers placed wreath at the firemen martyrs memorial at Fire Service headquarters in St, Inez.
Dr John read out the names of the firemen martyrs which also included names of Goan firemen killed on duty. They are Amar P Mandrekar (fire man), Prakash V Gawas (fireman) and Deepak S Gaonkar (driver operator) attached to Bicholim Fire Station and Umesh P Kalangutkar of Fire Force Headquarters, Panjim.Every year April 14 is observed as Fire service Day throughout the country as a tribute to fellow firemen who died in action.
Beginning from April 14, fire services also observe Fire Service Week that will culminate with grand function on April 20. 'Learn not to burn, Cultivate Fire Safety Awareness' is the theme for this year's celebration.
The Department of Fire Services will be conducting various awareness programmes during the 'Week.' It has released a booklet containing information about all kinds of disasters and precautions to be taken. ----------------------------------- HERALD 15/4/04 page 7 -----------------------------------
