"CULTURE IS AN INTERACTION OF PLURAL FORCES": Celebrated playwright and actor, Mr Girish Karnad, said that various forces active in India are promoting "pan-Indian factors" and rewriting history books. Mr Karnad said that "Goa: A Daughter's Story", a book by Maria Aurora Couto, aptly shows how societies are able to adjust and also warns in what way the concept of development could be destroyed for sheer carelessness. Mr Karnad, who earlier released the book at a special function, said that people are made to believe the "manufactured image of Hindutva. However, no monolithic and unified theory succeeds in the world," he said.Ms Couto said that her book is about the generation trapped between two generations, one which was dying and the other which is not yet born." "The book, in fact, came out through deep personal psyche which went through generations," she admitted. The noted Konkani poet, Mr Manoharrai Sardessai, well-known cartoonist, Mr Mario de Miranda and Dr Jose Pereira also spoke on the occasion. (NT) BID TO ASSAULT CM PARRIKAR: An attempt to assault Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar during a campaign tour was foiled by his personal security officer at Veroda-Cuncolim on April 16. Ballappa Dessai, 50, learnt to be Goa Seva Dal president, handed a representation to Parrikar before he could address the meeting in a temple at Veroda. The accused alleged of a sub-standard building constructed under MPLAD. (GT) CM DENIES CODE VIOLATION: The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, has strongly denied the declaration attributed to him by the Congress of a financial grant of Rs.5 lakh made to Vedashastra Patshala at Sawantwadi. The Chief Minister has not declared any such financial help and therefore there is no question of violation of code of conduct for elections, said a press note issued by the Press Liaison Officer to CM. (H) 'CM MISLEADING GOANS': The president of the Congress in Goa, Luizinho Faleiro, said the chief minister is misleading the people of the State with wrong figures. He said from all the recruitments made in the police force since the BJP came to power in 2000, more than 2000 posts have been filled and not just over 1000 what has been claimed by the chief minister. He said from the nearly 2500 figure, only 37 are Catholics and 27 Muslims which is just over 2 per cent. (H) 'UGDP ALONE CAN PROTECT GOA'S IDENTITY': The United Goans Democratic Party is a party representing all the Goans and not any particular community, and hence there is no question of the party getting votes of only one community, said Cortalim MLA Matanhy Saldanha, while addressing a party meeting at Cortalim. (H) ONE HELD WITH CHARAS: In one of the biggest seizures of narcotic drugs in the State in recent times, the Anjuna police yesterday seized nearly 2.7 kg of high grade charas from a native of Himachal Pradesh worth Rs.2.70 lakh in open market, who has been arrested for possession of drugs. (NT) MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: A 52-year-old man, Mr Bapat Ganesh Shelkar, committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree in a jungle in Dabal on Thursday. (NT) OLD GOA HERITAGE UNDER THREAT: The process of conserving monuments of historical and archaeological importance in Goa seems to be getting tougher by the day, as natural calamities, faulty building technologies and insect activities seem to be taking a toll on Goa's pride-the monuments at Old Goa. Reports from the ASI, Goa Circle, indicate that the church of St Cajetan, the Augustine tower, Se Cathedral, the church of St Francis of Assisi and church of Our Lady of Rosary in particular have borne the brunt of Goa's harsh weather conditions and continue to be lashed at year after year.Laterite being the only stone locally available was used for building construction but being porous, it is found to be facilitating easy seepage and crumbling over a period of time. (H) INDIA'S FIRST ATM IN BUS 'Q' SHELTER: State Bank of India launched the country's first-of-its kind ATM in a bus 'Q' shelter near Bom Jesus Church, Old Goa. After many successful bypass surgeries on adults, a surgery was performed on Mayuri Shet, a 6-year-old girl from Pale, Usgao. Mayuri was suffering from recurrent cold and cough. Her family physician noticed an abnormal heart sound, which ultimately was detected to be due to a hole in the upper part of the heart-atrial septal defect. (GT) EROSION ALONG ANJUNA BEACH: The erosion along Anjuna beach has been documented a length both in the press and by written appeals to the Anjuna Panchayat, the Anjuna Police and to the Chief Minister. The main and primary cause for this erosion is the illegal beach sand extraction that continues to take place. It appears that no one in a position of power is interested in protecting the beach and that Anjuna beach is now considered a "dispensable beach". If the villagers of Anjuna are interested in preserving their beach and coast line they must mobilise themselves and stop the people taking sand from the beach. (Time de Mello, [EMAIL PROTECTED], Canada in Herald, Voices from the Internet) GOA NEEDS BOTH DABOLIM AND MOPA: The writing on the wall is that Dabolim and newly conceived Mopa will function as complimentary and supplementary like Santa Cruz and Sahar in Mumbai. May be Mopa, at some point of time will serve the hinterland of Konkan and nearby areas in Karnataka like Belgaum. The government is duty-bound to plan for the next generation. The demand to shift the Indian naval units from Dabolim area outside Goa is not only preposterous but also irresponsible. We need today an integrated area development not necessarily based on political or revenue boundaries, but a strategic approach to remove a lopsided development with multiplier economic benefit to a particular region. The 21st century is capped with connectivity, internet, e-mail and mobility and has reduced the distances. (Jagdish Wagh in GT) BEST OF WILMIX, SHARON: Music House, Mapusa, has recently released Wilmix & Sharon's Hit Konkani songs on CDs and cassettes.
