GOLD PLEDGED TO PORTUGUESE BANK UNCLAIMED: As many as 1800 sealed packets containing several kilograms of gold jewellery pledged to the Portuguese Overseas Bank "Banco Nacional Ultramarino" in the pre-1961 liberation era of Goa still remained unclaimed with its custodian, State Bank of India, in Panaji. A majority of the claimants with legally established kinship to the people who had taken the loan, had yet to come forward to redeem the loan and take back the ornaments. Only 3400 out of the 5200 borrowers, who had pledged their gold for loans in Portuguese currency "escudos" have turned up so far. (WE-GT) 'GOA CAN BE MODEL SOCIETY FOR WORLD': A British MP of Goan origin, Keith Vaz, feels that Goa can be a model for the entire world in these times of class, creed and racial conflicts plaguing the human society. "Goa can be a classic example for the world, where the people can perfectly live with each other," he said while delivering a talk on the improving relations between India and UK. He said the people of Goa have managed to maintain harmony amongst various sections of the society, where human values are respected. Vaz said the decision to host the International Film Festival venue in Goa is a jolly good thing to happen in the state. "This will give a further boost to tourism in the state," he said and added that he would seek support from his British government as well as the European Union to the film festival venue. Mamraj Yadav, who was a pillion rider on a motorcycle (GA-01-F-6796), driven by his brother Mangaldas, collided with a minibus (GA-01-V-2116) at a sharp turn near Sawal garage at Sawalwada-Pernem on April 13. Mamraj and Mangaldas were proceeding towards Malpem, when the mishap took place. While Mamraj breathed his last, Mangaldas is in a critical condition at the GMC. (H) DREDGING ISSUE: The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation has stated that the dredging in River Mandovi was not to broaden the road nor was the silt being compacted for its expansion. GSIDC chief executive officer Anand Ghate said the Captain of Ports had cleared the dredging work as large scale siltation was obstructing the movement of the vessels, specially the catamaran and there was no move to narrow the river at the ferry point.
