The manifesto was released at a function held at Nova Goa in the presence of BJP national Vice-President Balasaheb Apte, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, candidates Shripad Naik and Ramakant Angle, BJP ministers and MLAs. Barely a month after Calangute police busted a sex racket with the arrest of five minor girls under the Suppression of Immoral Trafficking in Women'a Act, at a restaurant in Calangute, yet another case of an alleged sex racket has come to light in the village. Though these activities are not secret to some rickshaw and taxi drivers in the locality, it has taken some Calangute residents by total surprise. Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira now fears that Calangute "could turn into another Baina, if the government is not serious of taking measures quickly to stop such activities. (H) MAN STABS WIFE TO DEATH: A man stabbed his wife (Salima Bi, 40) to death and later inflicted injuries on himself at Pishe Dongri, Kharewada, in Vasco, yesterday evening. The couple, originally from Hubli, had come to Goa seven months ago. (GT) CURTORIM MAN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES: One Oscar Menezes of Macazana-Curtorim, who met with an accident at Nuvem on April 16, succumbed to injuries in a private hospital in Margao on April 20. (H) MAN MISSING: A 65-year-old person, Mr Francis Fernandes, hailing from Cashetti-Khorjem-Aldona, has been reported missing since Monday. (NT) SECURITY BEEFED FOR POLLS: Security has been beefed up in the state for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls which will be held on April 26. The police have tightened security at polling stations and three companies of the Central Reserve Police Force comprising 240 personnel have already arrived to assist the Goa police. At present the strength of thew Goa police is around 4,500 while there were less than 3,000 police personnel in the last parliamentary as well as assembly elections. (NT) FOCUS SHIFT TO SOUTH GOA: Just five more days left for Goa to go to polls, the focus remains in south Goa as the sitting Member of Parliament Ramakant Angle who is trying to retain his seat, is pitted against former MP Churchill Alemao. Having made inroads into the Salcete taluka from 1998, the BJP this time has concentrated quite a lot in this area. (GT) CHANGE IN POLL STRATEGIES: Political parties in the State have changed their campaign strategies for the LS elections to be held on 26 April in the State. Unlike earlier elections, when more stress was being given to public meetings, the candidates of various parties have laid interest on the corner meetings and door-to-door canvassing. Also a very few banners are seen in some of the places while the announcement on the vehicle is being hardly witnessed. But, it's election time now and these two mediums have come in handy for the political parties to send across their message to the electorate. And, not to mention about orchestras in the hinterland talukas and tie-breakers and volleyball tourneys across the constituency. (H) SU-RAJ BACKS CONG-NCP: Declaring its support to Congress-Nationalist Congress Party alliance, the Goa Su-Raj Party has urged the Goan electorate to vote for both the parties for the survival of Secular Democratic Constitution. (H) GOVT SANCTIONS DEARNESS RELIEF: The government of Goa has sanctioned dearness relief to government pensioners/family, pension shall be enhanced from the existing rate of 59 per cent to 61 per cent with effect from January 1 based on grant of dearness relief to Central government pensioners and pensioners of all-India services. (GT) GOAN DELEGATION TO VISIT CANNES FILM FEST: A Goan delegation is expected to visit the Cannes Film Festival during its second week to help organise the International Film Festival of India in Goa in December 2004.
