To commemorate 30 years of the April Revolution (1974) the Government of Portugal
handed over to its National Archives (Torre do Tombo) during an official ceremony
today (24th April) official records pertaining to the Salazar and Marcelo Caetano
regimes, covering the period 1938-1974. Those attending the function were presented
with a dossier with sample photocopies of selected records and two CDs. One contained
the same samples, and the other presents in 16 chapters statistics of the Portuguese
achievements during the past 30 years of experience in democracy. I was particularly
happy to hear during the presentation that the documents now transferred to public
domain contain many papers relating to Portuguese India. Any bonafide scholar can now
have access to these records.
