GoaNOW Webzine at: http://www.goacom.com/goanow ST FRANCIS XAVIER'S EXPOSITION: The committee constituted to plan and monitor the preparations for decennial celebrations of the relics of St Francis Xavier met on 10 May and constituted several key committees to make the event safe and successful for devotees. The meeting of the committee headed by Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar as chairman was held under the guidance and supervision of Chief Minister at the Secretariat. The Chief Minister is learnt to have deliberated on minute issues pertaining to facilities to be provided to devotees as well as thousands of visitors, national and international, who will gather at the venue for 45 days in view of the Exposition. The government had announced that it would sanction Rs.one crore for all the preparatory work as well as for providing various facilities on the site at Old Goa. It was also decided to make known about the Exposition worldwide in view of the hosting of the International Film Festival of India in Goa at the same time. It was decided that the Kadamba Transport Corporation expedite the purchase of its 100 new buses for plying exclusively to Exposition site from several parts of the State. Tourism department resolved to put additional garbage collection vans to use at Old Goa. (GT) MAIN IFFI COMPLEX SHELVED: The State government is scouting for a new site to set up the main festival auditorium complex for IFFI. This is because the proposal for the Rs.16.5 crore project scheduled to come up on the site of the demolished football grounds adjacent to the Kala Academy complex, has been referred to the Union Ministry of Forest and Environment, New Delhi, by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority. (H) THIRD PATTO BRIDGE: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority on May 10 granted environmental clearance for the construction of the parallel Patto bridge, Panjim, officials said. (H) RS.99 CRORE PLAN FOR WATER STORAGE: The water Resources Department in Panaji has submitted an ambitious futuristic plan to the government involving construction of 66 bhandharas, veirs and barges, in all costing Rs.99 crore along rivers Kalay, Khandepar, Kushavati and Mhadei in a bid to make available additional raw water storage capacity in Goa. The new works would ensure that water scarcity faced in areas such as Sanguem, Canacona and some remote parts of Sattari taluka is well taken care of. The plan proposes to increase the raw water catchment area in Goa by an additional 5.34 million cubic meters in the next 18 to 12 months. (GT) MAN KILLED IN MISHAP: Eknath Satarkar, a 45-year-old man from Velsao, who was walking on the road after being discharged from the sanatorium, was allegedly crushed to death by a jeep. The police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the jeep driver Anton Colaco. (GT) CYCLONE LIKELY TO WEAKEN: The cyclonic system, presently situated in the East central Arabian Sea is likely to weaken in the next six hours, informed the department of Meteorology in Panjim. (H) FEMALES A DECIDING FACTOR: The claims and counterclaims by the Congress and the BJP notwithstanding, the two contenders will now have to contend with one crucial factor, the women power. For, the females now hold the key to the success of both Churchill Alemao and Ramakant Angle as the womenfolk outnumbered the men at the time of casting ballots. Barring Margao, the remaining seven Assembly segments of Loutulim, Benaulim, Curtorim, Fatorda, Velim, Navelim and Cuncolim saw women outnumbering men at the polling booths. Of the total 1,15,028 votes polled, nearly 60,441 women cast their votes. (H) ONE DETAINED FOR HARASSMENT: The Maina-Curtorim police yesterday detained on May 9 one Rosario Costa from Macazana for being a threat to the villagers. The man was mentally ill and was threatening people with two choppers since morning. (NT) SSC, HSSC EXAM RESULTS: The results of the secondary school certificate examination (SSC) and Higher secondary Examination (HSSC) will be declared by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Porvorim, in the last week of May. In all, 18,453 students had appeared for SSC examination, while 12,244 for HSSC examination in March-April this year. (GT) DRIVE TO BEAUTIFY VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council has undertaken a drive to beautify Vasco city. It has demolished three construction which were lying in an unused condition. (NT) TURTLE CONSERVATION: Thanks to the awareness created by Fr Mariano Goes Proenca, parish priest of Galgibaga, Canacona, with the cooperation of the Forest Department Wildlife Division, the fishermen as well as locals now know the importance of conserving turtles, which come to the shore during the breeding season. Last week, while fishing some fishermen from Galgibaga netted three 'Green Turtles', of which two died after injuries. The fishermen handed the lucky survivor to the Forest Department. It was later released into the sea at the hands of Fr Proenca. 'Green Turtles', a rare species found in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, were found for the first time in Galgibaga waters, more famous for the Olive Ridley turtles. (GT) 'SACRED GROVES' EXHIBITION: An exhibition titled 'Sacred Groves of India & Rock Art of India and Abroad' at the Kala Academy's Art Gallery from 10 am to 7 pm. 'GOANS SHOULD LEARN TO APPRECIATE LOCAL POETS': Noted educationist and Konkani writer, Professor Suresh Amonkar, unfolding the reasons for translating the Tamil epic "Thirukkural" into Konkani, said that the interaction with his Tamil teachers as well as the highest regard and dedication displayed by the people from Tamil Nadu towards their saint poet, Thiruvalluvar, inspired him to undertake the task. Prof Amonkar, who was addressing a gathering on the occasion of the release of the translated version at the Black Box on May 10, lamented that Goans were very parsimonious in appreciating the works of their own poets and did not display the graciousness of Tamil people. Earlier, the former IAS officer, Dr Albano Couto, released the book under the 'Sahityaprakash' scheme of Kala Academy. "Thirukkural is a much revered epic by the first century Tamil saint poet, Thiruvalluvar. (H) ONE VOTER, 100% TURNOUT: Mr C Dasan was the lone voter at the Koorachundu panchayat in the Vadakara Lok Sabha seat in a Kerala district. In his 60s and a bachelor, Mr Dasan lives in a forest near the Kakayam police camp. Until recently, he used to work with some others at an estate. But the rest have left the place ever since the estate close down, and today Mr Dasan only has five cows for company. A Maths teacher for most of his teacher career, Almeida has been a member of the Goa SSC Board and has also co-authored middle school Maths books. (H) ASSAGAO SACRISTAO TO BE FELICITATED: The parishioners of Assagao Church have decided to honour sacristao Assis Fernandes, who is due to retire after completing 50 years service in the church. A solemn Eucharistic celebration will be held at which the main celebrant will be Archbishop-Patriarch Emeritus Raul Gonsalves. The mass will be followed by a function in honour of Assis, who will hang his boots on May 16.
