It is impossible to have free and fair elections as long as the Election Commission is dependant on the state government machinery for conducting the polls. The Election Commission should be wholly autonomous and its Commissioners should nurse no political ambitions.
Was it proper for former Election Commissioners T.N Seshan and M.S.GIll to have ventured into a political career. M.S Gill has recently become a Congress party Rajya Sabha MP while T.N Seshan was given a Congress ticket in one of the earlier elections to fight against L.K.Advani. People who occupy high constitutional posts should be barred from joining a political party. Is it time to think in terms of a code of conduct for Election Commissioners themselves?
