The mango prices dipped to Rs.300/- a dozen for Devgad Alphonso and to Rs.120 a dozen of inferior Malcurada this week. The rain that lashed Goa today may make those prices history once more.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit Devgad, a small coastal village in Southern Maharashtra [about 200 km. North of Mapusa] which boasts of a Maratha period fort[ gad]. I do not know if dynamite was used in warfare in this place. Dynamite was definitely used to blast the rocks to...hold your breath...excavate rocky terrain for planting mango grafts! The rocks heat up in October and help the progressive farmers who also use ICI-produced plant hormone to induce early flowering and early crop of mango. These farmers obtain premium prices at the start of the season....Rs.1000/- plus per dozen mangoes. A six dozen mango 'peti' is almost worth its weight in gold. Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, Bopli, Totapuri and other mango varieties as also Kokum, Aonla , Jammun and other fruits from the Konkan region of Maharashtra will be on display and sale at the Konkan Fruit Fest at Campal from 10.30 A.M. on 07 May to 7 P.M. on 09 May,2004.
