THE AGONY OF LOSING ELECTION BY ONE VOTE!

MYSORE: If a candidate is to lose in an election by a big margin, the agony he suffers from his exit may not be as intense as if he is elbowed by a solitary vote.
In an election to a state legislative assembly, where the number of voters in a constituency ranges from 80,000 to 1.25 lakh, losing by one vote, the agony is more poignant.
This trauma was more evident in Santhmaranahalli assembly constituency in the neighbouring Chamarajnagar district where the Congress candidate Dhruvanarayan made his debut sidelining JD-S's nominee A R Krishnamurthy by one vote.
All through the counting process, there were moments of agony and ecstacy as the lead position between the two candidates kept changing.
In a mirage-like situation, the victory garland was hung around Dhruvanarayan, but he could not be declared winner as JD-S supporters asked the Returning Officer for recounting of the tabulated figures.
The counting process was gone through again and finally the result was declared at 8 PM, after a delay of eight hours. In the photo finish, Krishnamurthy, who secured 40,751 votes, failed to achieve the hat-trick of wins.
There was a scuffle between the supporters of the two candidates following delay in declaring the result, and police had to resort to 'mild' lathi-charge.
