John also acknowledged the fact that in Goa as also in Kerala, a large number of children employed, are from the other states. The CACL has resolved to press for an amendment to Child Labour Protection Act classifying child labour in domestic and hotel sectors as hazardous. The decision was taken at the two-day National Co-ordination Committee meet which concluded at Betim and was hosted by the Child Rights Cell of the All India trade Union Congress at Betim yesterday. (GT) ASIAN NEWS TV CHANNEL: Joseph Rodrigues, working as a Director with Mumbai-based "Asian News" TV channel, is all set to realize his dream of starting a channel in his mother tongue Konkani. Rodrigues, who hails from Ribandar, has planned to launch the Konkani channel under the aegis of Asian news. The new Konkani language channel-JOEMAR Entertainment Channel-is expected to start beaming programmes from 20 July. Although it is planned to beam this channel all over the Konkan belt, even covering Kerala and Karnataka, however, initially, the launch will be only in Goa. The Goa office will be looked after by Agnelo Lobo of FM Satellite service, Navelim. (GT) REHABILITATION OF SEX WORKERS: As part of the State government's rehabilitation plan, commercial sex workers along with their children will be shifted from Baina, Vasco, and housed at the old Bal Niketan building on the Ribandar plateau later this month where they will be given vocational training. (H) SUPPORT SOUGHT FOR WATER SPORTS: Reis Magos panchayat has decided to meet Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to enlist his support against setting up water spots facilities in the village. This was decided at an extraordinary gram Sabha meeting on the Panchayat on Sunday. (H) RAINS DAMAGE BANANA PLANTATIONS: Heavy downpour coupled with strong winds has caused extensive damage to banana plantations in Nachinola and Moira. According to local ZP member Fred Fernandes, as many as 19 farms were affected with almost 500 banana trees getting destroyed. A large quantity of 'Mondollchi' variety of bananas, which Moira is very popular for, were also destroyed. (H) WOMAN KILLED: Sharawati Babuso Naik, a 40-year-old woman from Adanwada-Marcaim died on June 7 morning when a coconut fell on her as she was washing clothes near a well. (NT) EXECUTIVE DIES IN CRANE CRASH: Harbour police said the company president of Western India Shipyard LTD TS Murthukumar Swamy (62), was on his routine rounds, when a suspended sling of a crane accidentally came crashing down on Swamy, on June 7 morning. (H) ONE DROWNS: An attempt to collect shell-fish proved fatal, when 43-year-old Shankar D Kandolkar from Titowada-Nerul drowned in the river at Nerul on June 7 morning. (H) WOMAN ELECTROCUTED: Chandrem Velip from Balli died due to electrocution when she came in contact with a live wire while passing through a field on June 7 afternoon. Velip was returning home with the firewood and was passing through the fields. However, when she reached a water pump of a farm house, she lost balance and tried to hold onto a live wire. (NT) 'HUNGRY' DOCTOR: Sayiasha S Tilve, a four-year-old girl from Bordem in Bicholim, in need of treatment was made to wait at the Bicholim Primary Health Centre simply because the doctor was at lunch. (H) SEATS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS: In a bid to give solace to senior citizens and handicapped persons traveling in intra-state buses, the State government has decide to reserve 12 seats to them. The proposal will be implemented shortly. (NT) GRADE SYSTEM FOR SSC, HSSC: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is examining a proposal to declare results of the SSC and HSSC examination in two grades namely, relative and absolute grades. (NT) MAN SPITS ON COUNCILOR: In a fit of anger, one Suraj alias Gaju Shrikant Pal, a resident of Bicholim, spat on a BMC councilor at the Bicholim market on June 7. (GT) PANEL TO CHECK LAND ENCROACHMENT: The State government has set up a five-member committee to formulate new guidelines for regularization of encroachments on government land. The procedure for allotment of Comunidade plots has also been simplified. Announcing this, the Revenue Minister Pandurang Madkaikar said the committee has been given 60 days to submit the report to the government. (H) A VIRTUAL PAPER TIGER: The District Planning Committee in respect of South Goa was constituted and notified in October 2003, is literally a paper tiger. The committee could not put in place a development plan for the current financial year 2004-05. What's more is the fact that not a single meeting of the South Goa district planning committee has taken place since its constitution in October last. (H) VENDORS FLOURISHING IN MAPUSA MARKET: Many people may not believe that a few square meters in Mapusa Municipal Market, which is occupied by daily vendors on what were once roads, is worth a few lakh rupees. But it is a fact that three or four square metres used by squatters on the road are worth at least Rs.2 to 3 lakh at the rates prevailing at the moment.
