As usual, Domnic's encyclopaedic memory of recent Goan history never fails to amaze me. That was a wonderfully informative piece on Movie Theatres in the Bardez area.
But I think there was an error.
Dominic mentions "JANATA Talkies" in Aldona. I don't recall any such theatre but I do know that movies were shown to the public in 'Teacher' Margaret's house opposite the motorcycle pilot stand near the 'triangle'. It was named 'Sita Talkies' and could accommodate about a 100 people on wooden benches (banc) and a few chairs. It functioned for just a few years - 1965 to 1967 approximately. It was a permanent part of the house and had normal walls and a tiled roof.
I am to young to have seen a movie at Sita Talkies but remember that when were in the Primary School in St. Thomas Girls School they would show us black and white Hindi movies once in a way. All I recall is Rajesh Khanna, his valiant dog Moti, and this really evil bald villain named Shetty. And of course the lovely, seductive Helen.
Later at the St. Thomas Boys School Sir John Shadrack used to be the Projector Operator and we were introduced to the angry young man Amitabh Bachan in Zanjeer and then Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh and finally Zeenat Aman!!
Since we are talking movies I would like to inform Aldonkars that my Dad's cousin Leo D'Souza from Corjuem was very much a part of the Bollywood industry, till recently when he was consigned to a wheelchair. Leo is visible in many movies of the Seventies and Eighties playing the drums in any Hindi movie song which featured a live band. He later changed his line to hiring out musical props and instruments to film producers. Some five years back due to an infection he had to have first one and the other leg amputated and now lives in his flat at St. Tome Plaza in Aldona. Talking to him is a real pleasure as he knows every movie star, producer and director in Mumbai through years of personal association.
Sanjay Dutt and Aiswarya Rai are currently shooting for a Hindi film at the new exclusive resort in Corjuem and Sanjay droped in to see his old friend Leo yesterday at his flat.
Maybe they should shift the IFFI to Aldona! We certainly have a film culture.
