I attended this tiatro in Anjuna on May 10. It indeed has a good theme and every one of the actors has done his/her part well. However, the audience on that night was rather disappointed because of the speed with which the tiatro began and ended. At the end of the tiatro one could hear the dispersing crowd murmur Tiatro boro assa punn khup daumddailo utram sarkim sozmonaslint, and I totally agreed with their sentiments. The reason was as follows:

Mario Menezes show was to begin JUSTUCH sanjechea 6 horar (Exactly at 6:00 p.m.). However, as always, the show began at 6:30 p.m. (this is a big improvement), but to make matters worse, Mario was staging the same show that night in Navelim at 10:30 p.m. So, obviously, he had to rush in order to wind up the tiatro as fast as possible, but at whose cost? The result - audience could not follow fast delivery of dialogues which resulted in unnecessary audience disappointment. Gone are those days when tiatro directors could take people for a ride. Nowadays, the audience has not only become clever but they also demand value for their money. Navelim is very far from Anjuna. I dont think Mario and his troupe reached there within 45 minutes. Even if they did, that is placing everyones life on board the bus in danger!

A director may have two shows on the same day providing there is enough time to commute between the two places. He should also allow for sufficient time for actors/actresses to relax a bit so that they can give their best in the repeat show of the day. For example, there is no harm if a show is held in Mapusa at 10:30 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. and again in Margao or Vasco on the same night at 10:30 p.m. I wanted to make this suggestion to Mario but could not because he and his troupe rushed to the bus the moment the last scene was over.

Speaking of punctuality, I salute late J.P. Souzalin uncle who always began his tiatros at 9:00 p.m. sharp and wound them up at around 12:00 a.m. Whenever Souzalin staged a tiatro, people arrived at the hall well in advance of the given time. Thus, he managed to change tiatro goers attitude, and I am sure all of us can do it!

MARIO'S PLAY: Mario Menezes' latest offering "Sangat, Ami Bhurgim
Konnachim?" is a show that proves why Mario Menezes is called 'tragedy king
'. The audience could be heard sniffing and seen wiping away their tears as
the play unfolded. The Konkani play deals with the effect of divorce on
young minds and how the children work towards re-uniting their estranged
parents. (Julio D'Silva GT)
