Samir is right in what he says about corruption. However, the original residents
of Baina, must be very happy that they no longer have the stigma of living in
a place that is rated/viewed poorly. It was a living nightmare to all the folks there,
with all the filth and the stench. The Baina beach was virtually hijacked by the pimps
and the sex workers. It was a big vote bank for the politicians of Vasco.
I had worked in Vasco for a while and heard from Vascoites that, Baina beach was
indeed very nice, before all these nefarious activities started. A decent man could
not venture to the beach, without being solicited or looked at suspiciously, on
coming out of that area!

It is quite interesting that the govt. has rode rough-shod over prostitution
cubicles. Is the issue of prostitution as big a menace as it is made out to be
from a social viewpoint? True, those who are forced into prostitution and
need to be rehabilitated helped, but given the response of prostitutes themselves,
it looks like this was a one-way effort by the government.
Instead of being moral police, the govt. should instead swoop on all govt.
offices and rehabilitate those who are taking bribes, those who are absent from
their desks. The govt. ought to enforce some discipline into traffic where
the death rate beats that in the Iraq war. The govt. can swoop on the dismal
level of medical care that is present in the Goan hospitals today.
This will have much more sensible and beneficial effect on society than swooping on prostitution.
