Just read in the expat Indian papers that Sylvester Fernandez has been nominated to run against Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) in the US elections due this November, from the 6th Congressional District in New Jersey. Fernandez, as the spelling of his name suggests, traces his origins to Quilon in Kerala (now called Kollamb). A nice place, which was apparently also once tied in some way to Portuguese colonial links. Fernandez is the Republican state party leader, and according to http://www.emalayalee.com website, his nomination was conferred as a unanimous nomination. Does anyone know of politicians of Goan origin active in the US? There don't seem to be any... unlike the MPs and MEPs in the UK, former deputy speakers of Kenya, the role played by politicians of Goan origin in Lusophone Africa, and even in Portugal itself. If this information is so, any idea why Goans don't seem to be taking to politics in the US? Just curious... FN
