I think this should be directed to the Portuguese embassy cultural section for accurate answers.

It would be interesting to know the meanings of the Portuguese-origin surnames prevalent in Goa. For example :

Carvalho- oak tree
Pinto - chick
Pinheiro - pine tree
Leitao- suckling pig
Mesquita - mosque (?)
Coelho - rabbit

Could we compile an exhaustive list ? Names acquired
from noblemen who gave their names to locals are a
different genre, eg Mascarenhas, Tavora. The story of
the Tavoras of Saligao is also dramatic as I heard
from Fr. Nascimento.

Regards,
Jose Lourenco
