Some updates on Dom Moraes, the son of Frank Moraes (and nephew of Goanetter
Dr Teresa Albuquerque) who died some weeks back:

Ironically, for somebody who had the reputation of being a
'stranger', it may be interesting to note that he wrote
more books about India than most of the know writers of
our time. His travelogues about India like 'Gone Away'
(1960), 'The Open Eyes: A Journey through Karnataka' (1974),
'A Family in Goa', 'Bombay' (1979), and then his masterpiece
        'My Son's Father: A Poet's Autobiography' (1968),
'The Tempest Within: An Account of East Pakistan (1971), etc
also sort of explains the comparatively small output of
his poetry. -- Kumar Vickram writing in the July 2004 issue
of 'National Book Trust Newsletter', New Delhi.

BOOKS TODAY, the book club magazine of the INDIA TODAY group, in its August
2004 issue also features Dom Moraes' new work:

THE PENGUIN BOOK OF INDIAN JOURNEYS, ed Dom Moraes.
This volume brings together pieces by some of
the best contemporary writers in the English
        language -- R K Narayan, V S Naipaul, Vikram
Seth, Salman Rushdie, Ruskin Bond, Kushwant Singh,
Mark Tully, Paul Theroux, William Dalrymple, to name
a few. Travel writers -- Indian and foreign, as well
as well as compulsive wanderers without a home --
engage with the comforts and the chaos, the
convictions and the contradictions of modern,
        independent India

THIS IS WHAT an unexpected mail in my in-box said some time back.

Dear Frederick, This a far email from Indonesia. I found in the Asia
Magazine an interview with political prisoner in Indonesian gulag made by
Dom Moraes. I looked through the picture taken in 1972 compare to his new
book 2003 its seem the same person. Would you help me track down. Is it
this the same man who work form Asia Magazine 31 years ago. If yes, would
help me find his address and phone number?

The reason for this: Indonesia femous writer that Pramoedya Ananta Toer was
interviewed by Dom Moraes. Dom Moraes was the only journalist who could get
access to the very remote Indonesia Gulag. He made such a remarkable
writing. Would he has some story left unwrite? Pramoedya Ananta Toer is the
only Asia contestant for Nobel prize. He is in Sweden now.

Thank you, Poriaman Sitanggang
