TENSION IN SANGUEM: Death of an injured youth, following the alleged negligence by the doctor and nurse at the health centre, brought Sanguem to a boil on September 28, with irate villagers damaging the Sanguem Primary Health Centre after the medical officer and the staff nurse on duty refused to accompany an injured man - Sameer Naik (39) - to the GMC on September 27 night. The incident occurred during the Ganesh idol immersion at Sangampur river bank when 30-year-old Sameer Naik accidentally fell down from a height of 12 feet resulting in serious head injuries. (GT) "NO NEGLIGENCE": Health Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar stated that there has been no negligence by Primary Health Centre Sanguem staff in treating the patient (Sameer Naik) on Monday night. (GT) SANGUEM BANDH: The Sanguem villagers have called a Sanguem Bandh today (September 28) demanding action against staff of the Sanguem primary health centre, where the youth (Sameer Naik) was admitted. (NT) UGDP HEADING FOR A SPLIT? Political tremors hit the United Goans Democratic Party over the action by senior vice-president Radharao Gracias to address the meeting of BJP candidate Isidore Fernandes in Poinguinim. The party leadership has decided to take action against Gracias for what they called "indiscipline" committed by the senior leader. Party Secretary General, Anacleto Viegas, said he does not rule out a split in the party over Radharao's action. (H) "I ADDRESSED MEET AS LAWYER": UGDP leader Radharao Gracias has maintained that he has addressed Isidore's meeting in his capacity as a lawyer. Speaking to Herald, Gracias in his characteristic style said, "I am a lawyer. My services are available whenever they are sought for." (H) TRAFFIC DIVERSION: The District Magistrate, North Goa, has ordered the closure of the stretch of DB Bandodkar Marg from office of the Captain of Ports to opposite the statue of DB Bandodkar, near Secretariat, for vehicular traffic proceeding to Panaji Bus Stand between 9.30 and 7 pm till 16 October, 2004, to take up the work of river bank protection. (GT) TEACHER DIES AFTER JUMPING INTO WELL: Soni Naguesh Gaunekar, 24, a resident of Borda Margao and a primary school teacher, committed suicide by jumping into a well on September 27 night. Soni had married Nagesh, a builder, and has a five-year-old son. (GT) SKY BUS TECHNOLOGY STILL UNDER EXPERIMENTATION: KRC: KRC Managing Director, B Rajaram, has maintained that the sky bus technology is still under experimentation and that it would take at least five months before the technology is put for commercial use. (H) 'ILLEGAL' DANCE FLOOR AT MIRAMAR: An outdoor dance floor being constructed by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation seems to pose a threat to the sandy shores at Miramar. Work on the Rs.10 lakh project began last week and is alleged to have commenced without the procurement of any construction license from the Corporation of the City of Panaji, or NOCs from the PDA or clearances from the Goa Coastal regulatory Zone Management Authority. (H) CHILDREN'S ACT: More than a year after the formulation of Goa Children's Act, the government is only now waking up to correct the drawbacks and loopholes of the Act, that has been touted as a showpiece legislation and a bold move by the government of Goa. The government has been late in realising that the instrument by which it plans to curb abuses of young children, is blunt and can be challenged by any accused booked under it. (GT) RASTA ROKO IN CURTORIM: Sending clear signals of its stiff opposition to the project, residents of Curtorim staged a rasta roko at Paddevaddo on September 28 against the setting up of the proposed sponge iron plant in the locality. The rasta roko coincided with the foundation laying ceremony held by the factory management. (H) ORLIM VP DEPUTY QUITS: The deputy sarpanch of Orlim village Panchayat, Anju Braganza, has quit office. He did not cite any special reason for his decision to step down from office. (H) ANJUNA DY SARPANCH OUSTED: Shital Dabholkar has been ousted as the deputy sarpanch of Anjuna-Caisua village panchayat at a special meeting convened on September 28. Sarpanch Savio Almeida, Dynaneshwar Shirodkar, Alex Ramos, Justin D'Souza, Pratima Govekar, Sharad Naik, Leopoldina D'Souza and Fatima Rebello voted in favour of the motion, while Pooja Chimulkar voted against it. (H) NCP PREFER SHELVONA: Nationalist Congress Party state president and MLA, Dr Wilfred de Souza, on Tuesday, suggested that Shelvona site be preferred for setting up environment friendly state-of-the-art iron ore handling plant and eliminate the dust and noise pollution Curchorem town. (GT) SITE FOR TREATING GARBAGE: The state government has now identified Korgao in Pernem in addition to Colvale for setting up the garbage treatment plant even as it was yet to take a final decision in the matter. (GT) THEATRE LOVERS IN FOR A TREAT: Kala Academy's festival of Hindi plays, Rang Yatra, takes off today at the Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir in Ponda and Rabindra Bhavan, Curchorem.
