THIS EVENING, Vijay dropped in with 'peddas' -- the traditional sweets
distributed when a baby boy is born at home. (Don't ask why this
discrimination in traditions -- 'peddas' for a boy, 'jelebis' for a girl; or
two-packets of crackers for a girl, and three for a boy ....)

Dear Fred,

All this 'discrimination' has a very logical explanation and is completely explained in my illustrated book, "In China they do it with Chillies - Regional Gender Icons at Childbirth". I could have posted excerpts from my book (Chapter 7 - "Luso-Indian Childbirth Motifs in 20th century Goa") on this September Forum but:

1) It loses context without the explanatory Illustrations and Photos.
2) It involves a lot description of anatomy that may not be appropriate for GoaNet subscribers.
3) It definitely will not get past the high moral values of the GoaNet Admin Team.
