Hi Lawrence This message is directed to you re your query re Marriage dates For your information the Govt.of Goa still applies the Portuguese law with regards to Catholic marriages in Goa. To keep it simple the Official Marriage is the one conducted in the Church wherein you sign the Registers after the marriage and the Church then forwards these details to the Civil Registrar . The Civil Registration which takes place at the Civil registrar's Office also called a Regis Civil is only the No- Objection Certificate from the State to the marriage of the couple( This certificate is valid for 3 month only) . The Church will not conduct the marriage unless provided with the NOC. So the Date of the Church marriage is the valid Date of Marriage. For those who want to get married outside the Church , they can do at the Civil Registrar and the marriage is then called a Court Marriage . For those who want to get have the Church marriage abroad, the Church allows a Court Marriage here and the couple can then have a church marriage abroad ( they are however not allowed to live together during the intervening period.)
