I had a lot of chance to hear views similar to posted here, on my recent visit to Goa. Having watched Goa and the CM's operation closely for the last few years under Parrikar's CM-ship, I have a few observations to make. 1) Parrikar is clearly a power-addict. His main aim, above all the other development, is to keep his 22 seats and the power. To do that, he will do anything; we have seen what this means, over the years. This includes aligning with "pimps", buying MLAs and what not. So, let us throw out this funda of Parrikar and his govt. being non-corrupt out of the window. 2) Having said that, sure, Parrikar has done some development; it may be more than what the previous govts have done. But remember that the Goan budget is Rs. 5000 crores a year. Also, it is to be noted that under Parrikar's stewardship, the Goan govt financial position has gone from bad to worse. More and more percentage of the revenue is now going into paying interest rates for debts. Parrikar is not at all concerned about this and he continues giving freebies. Even the CAG of the govt. of India has warned the govt. on the fiscal position. Of course, media --- most being boot-lickers of Parrikar --- won't highlight that. 3) Parrikar has severe problems the way he operates. His mode of operation is completely dictatorial. He thinks he knows it all. Also, he is prone to taking revenge for even small things. Remember the raid on Datta Naik's Monginis and on Dr. Colaco, after they joined Lok Shakti. This reflects severe insecurities in his personality. Parrikar cannot work with someone equal in brains with him. He only wants 'yes-man' around him. 4) Overall, I think that Parrikar needs to be kept under severe check. If he is given more power, he can be a dangerous dictator. We have already seen some real nasty things happening in Tamil Nadu under Jayalalitha. In that sense, it is good that BJP has lost power now at the Center. At least due to this, the communal danger could have ebbed a bit, something that is another negative point of Parrikar. 5) Finally, on the IT front, Goa has been a disaster. The neighbouring states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh show how much we have lost. It won't be too long before we have top IT companies close to Goa's border (in Anamod and Karwar), while Goa will still be working on its yet-to-be-published IT policy. regards, Samir Kelekar Bangalore >Dear Goanetters. I have noticed that some of my fellow netters seem to be unable to find anything positive about the present CM of Goa, Mr. Manohar Parrikar. I will share with you some views based on my latest visit to Goa. Before Parrikar came to office, leading politicians in Goa was more occupied with filling their own pockets that spending public money on the people. A close look at Goa today, tells a different story. Even hard-core Catholics have to give Mr. Parrikar has some credit for all the development and infrastructure project which has been initiated in he last five years. On my latest visit to Goa, I had the pleasure of seeing that positive developments is taking place in my own native villages. Ribandar has got a new Patto bridge. Old Goa will soon have a new by-pas-road along the Kadamba plateau. Mr. Parrikar also seems to be determined to complete the new Highway between Panaji and Margao in his term of office. It is a said story that Ribandar for decades has been behind when it comes to development, compared with other leading villages in Goa. But that is not because of neglect from the Government. The people of Ribandar have simply not been able to choose honest spokesmen for their village. It is all a matter of supporting people who don't have hidden agendas, and who don't use most of their time in doing mischief and creating conflicts.
