Is this at all a possibility?
Just heard from Ujjwala Barve, a Pune-based radio professional who helps run a Marathi programme there, that the Australian National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcaster's Council represents ethnic community broadcasters in 104 stations.
They apparently put out 1700 hours of local programming, in over 100 languages. Of these, seven are from India (Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, and Marathi).
Radio stations reaching the Indian diaspora include 2BCR, 8TOP, 1CMS, 2GLF, 2RES, 2RSW, 2WOW, 2XX, 3ZZZ, 4EB, 4TTT, 5EBI, 6EBA, 7THE, 7LTN, 2NBC, CH31S, 2SER, 2MIA, 1CMS, 2rrr, 4YOU, 2BCR, 4RPH, 3SCB, 2SER, 2VOX, 3SER, 2MCE, 2000FM.
For instance, 2000FM runs only ethnic language groups programmes on the 98.5 FM (from Belmore Street, in Burwood, NSW phone 02 9715 5422).
Marathi programmes are broadcast at 8 pm on Tuesday and 10 am on Sundays. They generate finance through contributions of the Marathi Association Sydney Inc, sponsorships, advertisements, fund-raising programmes, and the free work of all local presenters.
It might be great if something from the Konkani world can get going there, even if it's mainly music-based programming! FN
