This time , the report comes from the San Francisco

We feel proud that SFGI put so much of emphasis
on encouraging the Goan Youth , they are the

Much of the credit for the success of this years

They have shown their true spirit of "Goaness" and the
essence of GOAN TOGETHERNESS , this is what
World Goa Day is all about.
To those who may not have had the opportunity of
PARTICIPATING in this years WORLD GOA DAY events ,
WE invite them to do so next year , we are confident that

Subject: World Goa Day
Dear Rene ,
Thank you very much for the great enthusiasm you instilled in us for World
Goa Day. The S.F. Goan Institute held its "Family Picnic and Sports Day in
the Park" on Sunday August 29,2004 at Pleasant Hill Park, Pleasant Hill,
California. At this event we celebrated "World Goa Day" in keeping with the
other Goan Organisations around the world.
The sporting events included a carrom tournament, tug-of war, bingo,
volleyball and various childrens games. The highlight was a soccer match
between the LA G.O.A and the San Francisco G.I. A rotating trophy to make
this an annual event was won by the S.F. G.I. The day culminated with a
raffle, the grand prize being a gift basket of Goan delicacies donated by
Roy Furtado of Essence of Goa, whom you kindly put us in touch with.
Mackey DeSouza was the proud winner of the grand prize.
President Gloria Dias addressed the crowd on the significance of World Goa
Day and Thomas Pereira delivered a small message in our native tongue
Konkani, and expressed how gratifying it was to see global unity for World
Goa Day. He entreated Goa's Patron, St Francis Xavier to give us virtues of
wisdom and guidance to live in Peace as one united community. We all joined
in the traditional Goan song ' Besaum Tumcher Podoum" before we partook of
the potluck of traditional Goan food prepared by our members.
The celebration of World Goa Day by the Goan Institute of the San Francisco
Bay Area was a grand success attended by close to 300 people. We plan to
continue the World Goa Day festivities at the celebration for St. Francis
Xavier's feast and cultural show on Dec 5, 2004, when we will have an essay
and poster competition for the youth in our community. We have selected the
following World Goa Day themes for our essay competition:
Proud to be a Goan.
What Goa means to me.
Christmas in Goa.
Challenges Goan youth face in preserving our culture.
Thank you once again on behalf on the Managing Council and the San Francisco
Bay Area community at large for instilling in us this great feeling of
solidarity with the International Goan community through World Goa Day.
Best Regards,
Basilio Noronha
Vice President
San Francisco Goan Institute,
USA
