Thanx Silviano, Melinda n Francisco ! You sure "flashed" some nostalgic memories or as our goanetter and my fellow goan Tanzanian - Viv would say "taking me down memory lane" And if I appendage Francisco, music transcends all barriers and has been a unifying factor in bringing people of diverse cultures together. But none could have summed it up better than the great William Shakespeare and I quote " If music be the food of love, then lets play on." On a lighter one, even though I am great lover of progressive jazz, black african music, fast rock and konkani music, I sternly believe that all the popular oldies are like the great classical number - the "Blue Danube"- they will be "never die". Silviano, with your permission, I'll take it in numerical sequence. 1) Add Cliff Richard's Bachelor Boy and the Next Time. 2)Nina and Frederick's Listen To The Ocean". 3) Pat Boone's "Speedy Gonzalez" and "Don't Forbid Me". 4)Come September - Silviano, that was my father's favorite in addition to "Wheels" Cha Cha Cha which you can add as another instrumental. I made it a point to get a special tape recorded with both these songs and some other songs by Connie Francis which my father and mother liked- including "My Happiness" and "Lipstick On Your Collar". 5) Baby Elephant Walk by the late Henry Mancini on Radio Ceylon. Since we could not get proper radio transmission in the fifties in my hometown- Iringa in southern Tanzania, we used to tune to Radio Ceylon and Radio Lourenco Marques (renamed Maputo) which were then probably the finest musical stations in the Third World. Baby Elephant walk is the theme song from the movie - "Hatari" (Danger in Swahili) which was filmed in Northern Tanzania. It featured the late American actors- John Wayne and Red Buttons, the German actor- Hardy Kruger and the actress-Elsa Martinelli. 9)How about Marie Lou and Someday by Ricky Nelson. Melinda, you cited Wooden Heart by Elvis Presley from the movie- GI BLue " featuring Elvis and the American actress and noted ballroom dancer and judge- Juliet Prowse. This song is a regular at all our "sing along" sessions in New York and New Jersey, and many of the folks love my version as I "throw" in two verses in my "broken" german. (the movie was filmed in the then West Germany). In addition to Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star", he had another great oldie- please refresh my memory. Other oldies that I would like to add are "Sealed With a Kiss" and a couple of songs dealing with the color Blue- "Blue Moon", "Blueberry Hill" by Fats Domino and "Blue, Blue You're Love Is True". I look forward to some more additions. rgds. Tony.
