(H) WOMEN'S POLICE STATION: The women's police station, Panaji, will be inaugurated on 21 October. The women's police station is situated between the Panaji police station and the Traffic Cell, Panaji, and its renovation work is in full swing. It will remain open for 24 hours. (GT) GOVT TO WIND UP FEW VOCATIONAL COURSES: In a bid to streamline vocational education in the State, the government has decided to discontinue a couple of commerce-based vocational courses from the academic year 2005-06. (H) BULLETS, SHELLS FOUND ABOARD DREDGER: Workers of the Western India Shipyard Limited on Monday stumbled upon bullets and shells, while carrying out repair works on a Holland-based dredger "Volvox Hansa", that came from Pakistan. (H) VEERAPPAN SHOT DEAD: Dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan and three of his associates were killed late on Monday night, a top police official said. Veerappan and his associates were killed by a team of Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu police headed by Jaykumar, at Papparapatti village in Dharmapuri district of the Tamil Nadu, the official said. (GT) DRAW OF SHACK LICENSES: The Tourism Department on Monday held a draw of lots to determine the issue of shack licenses. The draw concluded late Monday evening and was presided over by Tourism Director Arlindo Pereira. Pereira said that the department received 473 applications and that there were provisions for 228 shacks. The Department's new scheme is designed to train shack workers as lifeguards. (GT) GOA'S SHACK CULTURE SHACKLED: Twenty years ago, when I was almost 20, I ran a shack on Anjuna beach for a season. It was the best year of my life. Which is why I can understand why an increasing number of young men and women from cities like Mumbai (or Israel, Italy) come to Goa during the season to run a shack in Baga or elsewhere.It is important that the Government does not throttle this facet of Goa's tourism. Because shacks are one of those things which make Goa really special. After all, they're today also a unique part of our heritage. (GT) SLOTH BEARS RESCUED: Late last week, a pair of sloth bears being used for display and performances were seized by the Forest Department personnel from Quepem. (H) INJURED IN MISHAP: One Sunil Shiv Putropa Albuquerque and his brother Manil were proceeding on their Hero Honda from Quepem to their residence when their vehicle collided with a Scooty ridden by one Alleluia Rebello from New Ambelim, Assolna. Both the riders were injured. (H) MARGAO LOCAL MOVES COURT: A resident of Madel-Margao has approached the Panjim bench of the Mumbai high court praying that work on the mobile tower in the area be stopped in public interest. In his petition, Savio Dias prayed that the court issue directions to the State of Goa to constitute a scientific body to act as a regulatory mechanism to assess, monitor and control the radiation exposures from the mobile towers. Later, three hundred members from the "confraria" participated in a procession that was taken out after the statue of Menino Jesus was brought down for the "veneration" ceremony.
