Subject: [Goanet]Desecration of Columbus statues
Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 14:20:48 +0530

I read an unpleasant news that the statue of Christopher Columbus was pulled down in Venezuela in Carcas (I hope I have spelt the name of the city correctly), and that a statue in honour of the same person was vandalised in Boston, USA. I also read that the President of Venezuela said that Columbus was worse than Hitler.

Is there anyone on Goanet who can confirm that these events did take place? Or throw a correct light on the subject?

Capital of Venezuela: Caracas.

Columbus/Colon might have developed into a despot had he had the chance to
evolve from a discoverer into an empire-buider like Cortez, the one who stood upom
the Darien peak and viewed all, planets, stars and suns... within and beyond his ken.
