Fred I said that in 1998-99 while I was in Japan and got flamed by a Goan MAN who had left Goa in the 60s! He should know right? He thought women in Goa had a fine life - infinitely better than the oppressed and cowering non Goan women! That was the issue then - he still lingers on goanet! Yes, women in Goa have shouldered tremendous responsibilities while their husbands (and I am not saying it has been easy for them either) live in the Middle East or join the merchant navy. Hard though it might seem to overseas Goans, Goan society is still conservative and this is in every strata/caste.No, the much berated upper classes are not very liberal either. Education and financial independence has helped tremendously and for this we have to thank the Indian government which has provided everyone with a cheap education. This as you have pointed out Fred has been the biggest decimator of the caste system. Even without all the minority benefits that women in the USA have (and good for them!) Indian women have excelled in many fields - perhaps even more than their Western counterparts (if you balance it with the many advantages in the West) and that too in a very short time. This is specially so in the world of science.
