Domnic's piece on piggies was fantastic, hope he brings out a book with all this stuff soon, should be a bestseller. Incidentally, pork is noted for its similarity to human meat, and anthropologists, philosophers etc. have long speculated about the fondness for pork being some kind of atavistic throwback to the days of cannibalism. In fact, in the Pacific island archipalegoes, where cannibalism was commonplace till the 20th century, human meat was referred to as 'long pig'. Quite enough to put you off your pig for some time. Maybe this also has something to do with the Jewish and Islamic prohibition on pork, though the pop anthropologist Marvin Harris has speculated that this was due to these religions arising in desert socities, and keeping pigs there leads to consumption of too much water or something (the poor things can't sweat, so need to wallow, as Domnic has pointed out). Does anybody have any information regarding the incidence of tapeworm in pork? Goa has a very high percentage of tapeworm, probably due to consumption of much beef and pork raised in unhygeinic conditions. Don't let all this put you off your food; it certainly hasn't deterred me yet.
