their young parish-priest very fondly: he visited the even after sporting scarlet and pink.. But the poor man did not lack in foibles.
He was a great chum of Frank Moraes and when the opportunity permited, the two chummed with Nehru. All were hearty inbibers and literateurs and indubitably greatly enjoyed each other's erudition, scholarship and charm.
Thus,on the eve of launching Operation Vijay Nehru thought it best to confide in Gracias, with sincere belief that the latter's spiritual influence on Goan catholics would prempt accrimonious reception of the 'liberating' armies. Little did poor Panditji know the irrascibility of both the chardos and brahmins of Goa towards the 'upstart' prelate, no matter the hue or shape of his head. He was a rung lower than both.
To inadvertently aggravate matters still worse, Gracias, over cups, confided the entire details to another of his cronies: His Excellency, the Ambassador of Spain.
The feedback from the envoy to Madrid was promptly relayed to Tio Antoni, who hurriedly dispatched two war-ships, filled with he only knew what, to Goa.
It was these two ships that, Nehru's steadfast pancheel ally, Abdel Gamal Nasser, bottled up in the Suez, thereby critically alerting the international community to what Nehru had hoped to furnish, after a quickly, and as covertly as possible, delivered coup de grace, an ipso facto case re-unification.
