(GT) CABINET MEETING ON IFFI, EXPOSITION: The State cabinet has been convened at the new Assembly complex at 11 am today 1 November. The meeting is likely to take some important decisions in view of the oncoming IFFI and St Francis Xavier Exposition and also take a decision on issuing the Ordinance to amend the Goa Panchayati Raj Act, 1994. (GT) MALLYA, PARRIKAR INSPECT IFFI SITES: Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Mallya accompanied by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and others on Sunday evening visited the multiplexes and the Kala Academy site at Campal, which is the main venue for the International Film Festival of India. The visit holds significance as the state government is trying to rope in sponsorships for the IFFI 2004 event, it is believed. The liquor baron had earlier expressed his wish to sponsor part of the event. (GT) IFFI WORKS ON SCHEDULE: The Entertainment Society of Goa is gearing up to host the maiden venture of International Film Festival of India in Goa and all works are on schedule, according to ESG chief executive officer Sanjit Rodrigues. The ESG, with a skeleton staff, will host the 11-day festival while the opening and the concluding functions have already been entrusted to 'Times 360 Degrees' who have been appointed as the event managers. The multiplexes, with a total seating capacity of 1400 spectators, have been built by Inox Leisure Private Limited, Mumbai. They will also feature the latest movie screens imported from Germany. A new art gallery will exhibit a photo exhibition of 100 years of Indian cinema, Rodrigues stated. There will be 40 stalls where films would be traded by national and international producers and distributors. (GT) TOURISM-BASED COMMISSIONS RACKET: In destinations like Jaipur and Agra tourists are warned in advance that they are more likely than not to be taken to a handicraft emporium where glib-talking Kashmiri salesmen will persuade them to buy jewelry and carpets. There have been several cases when tourists have been cheated into buying fake jewelry and cheap carpets at exorbitant prices. Unfortunately for Goa, the time isn't far when similar advisories are issued to tourists visiting the State. Kashmiri businessmen have already taken over the handicrafts business here and have provided taxi drivers with the whiff of easy money. (GT) SWEDISH NATIONAL DIES: Jan Evert Baath, 55, a Swedish national, died while swimming at the Baga beach on October 31 evening. The police suspect that the tourist died following heart attack as he was found lying in an unconscious state in the water. (GT) YOUTH COMMITS SUICIDE AT ANJUNA: One Sandeep Shetgaonkar (23), of Bamanvaddo, Anjuna, committed suicide on October 31 by hanging himself to a mango tree. (GT) CAR CATCHES FIRE: A Maruti car belonging to Vijaya Fernandes, a resident of Baina, was badly damaged when it caught fire while being driven by Vijaya's husband, Franky, on Sunday morning. (GT) BLAZE AT RONIL ROYALE: A major fire broke out at the Ronil Royale Hotel, Baga, on Sunday morning. The fire broke out on the ground floor housing office and some files, two television sets, two refrigerators and nine wheel-chairs were gutted causing a loss of around Rs.1 lakh. (GT) BOM JESUS RECTOR APPEALS FOR HELP: The Rector of Bom Jesus Basilica, Old Goa, Fr Savio Barreto, has appealed to the faithful and well-wishers for cash donations in order to carry out the restoration work of the portion of the Professed House which was destroyed by a major fire on October 21. At the end of the mass at the Basilica on Sunday, Fr Barreto said that the restoration work is being carried out by the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, and will be completed before the Exposition of the Sacred relics of St Francis Xavier.The glass coffin contained the Sacred relics will be carried in a solemn procession by the representatives of the deaneries during the Opening and Closing ceremony of the XVI Exposition. (H) MAG TO LAUNCH STIR: The Motorcycle Action Group will launch a peaceful agitation against the helmet rule with demonstrations at the venue of the International Film festival of India at Campal commencing on November 29, in protest against the undue harassment being meted out to two-wheeler riders across Goa by the police. A public meeting held at Panjim on October 31, presided over by MAG convenor Premanand A Lotlikar, resolved to launch an intensive peaceful agitation to ensure that the government finds a comprehensive solution to the helmet issue. Adv Aires Rodrigues aid the police action was high-handed in view of the fact that the Goa Assembly on July 29 had unanimously resolved to set up a committee to study the helmet issue. (H) NAVELIM FOOD FEST: In order to raise funds for a soccer ground at Navelim, the authorities at the Rosary Church have planned to organise a 3-day food festival from November 12 to 14. Addressing a press conference at the parish residence, the parish priest Fr Jose Antonio Costa, said that Navelim is the largest and heavily populated parish of the State. (NT) IA INTRODUCES 'FAMILY TICKET': Indian Airlines has announced the introduction of its 'IA Family Ticket' scheme from 1 November. Under the scheme, a maximum of two children below 12 years of age can travel free with two full fare paying adult (parents) passengers. The scheme is valid till 31 January, 2005 on domestic sectors.
