They were perusing a notice put on the shutter, which read as follows: "hotel is closed due to lack of water." (H) PIPELINE AT QUEPEM IS REPAIRED: More than a dozen labourers, after a gruelling 38 hours, on Monday afternoon, finally completed work on the burst pipeline at Sirvoi in Quepem. (GT) SHOWERS CATCH PANJIMITES UNAWARES: The sudden thundershowers on Monday (November 1) evening caught people unawares, particularly in Panjim. The sudden heavy showers are the result of low pressure formed in the South-East Arabian Sea, according to KV Singh, the Director of Indian Meteorological Observatory. (H) VARIABLE FEE SCHEME FOR GRADUATION: The State government has approved a scheme that involves a "variable fee" for graduate-level education proportionate to the students' parental income. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told journalists, that the scheme would come into effect from the next academic year under which professional and other graduate-level colleges will charge fees higher than the current levels depending on the income slabs of the students' parents. (H) BURSARY SCHEME FOR STUDENTS: The State cabinet on Monday approved a bursary scheme for students of post-secondary training and educational courses run by the aided, the government and private institutions for implementation during the next academic year. (GT) HELPING NEEDY, POOR STUDENTS: Indian Students Education Aid Foundation, an NGO based at Rai, Siolim, has been doing a commendable job of helping the needy and poor students through its Technical Institutes and financial assistance to them to continue their higher studies. ISEAF, founded by a German national, Rudolf Schwartz, has sponsored some 570 students who have been studying courses such as Engineering, Pharmacy, BDS, Computer Education, Hotel Management, BEd, LLB, etc. Besides, 135 students completed their education last year with the financial assistance of ISEAF and have been employed in India and abroad, an ISEAF press release says. (GT) BASILICA FIRE PROBE RULES OUT SABOTAGE: The much awaited report on the cause of the fire incident that occurred in the Basilica of Bom Jesus annexe building recently was presented to the Director General of Police on November 1. Mr Amod Kant told The Navhind Times that the report ruled out any sabotage. (NT) IA IS OFFICIAL CARRIER: Indian Airlines has been designated the official carrier for the International Film Festival of India, scheduled to begin on 29 November. Indian Airlines will give registered delegates a discounted fair when traveling to and from Goa. (GT) BULLET TRAINS: As part of railways modernization, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad is expected to announce a policy envisaging introduction of bullet trains with a minimum speed of 250 kms per hour. To begin with, bullet trains would be introduced on the 500-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor which will connect the two cities in less than two hours as against rive to six hours by the existing fastest train Shatabdi Express. (PTI report in Herald) THREAT TO DUMP GARBAGE AT BRITONA VP OFFICE: Residents of the Housing board colony and Abhinav Complex at Porvorim are irked over the Penha da Franca panchayat's decision to dump garbage near the Housing Board Colony. The agitating residents have now threatened to dump the same garbage in front of the panchayat office at Britona. (H) WOMAN CHOKES TO DEATH: A 25-year-old married woman, Annie Vales of Dicarpale, was choked to death after she allegedly swallowed a handkerchief on October 31.within one month of her marriage. (H) TWO MINORS RESCUED: Police rescued two minors - 13-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl - on Sunday from the city (Panjim) and handed them over to their parents in Mapusa. Yesu and Adama were picked up from the Panjim market where they were brought by an "unknown person in an unknown car" on the pretext of providing them food, police said. (H) SWEDE FALLS INTO BAGA RIVER, DIES: A 54-year-old Swedish national died after he fell into the Baga river on November 1. According to police reports, Jan Eveert Baath collapsed and fell in the Baga river. Lifeguards pulled him out of the river, and Calangute police rushed the unconscious foreigner to the Candolim Primary Health Centre. He was, however, declared dead on arrival. The body was sent for an autopsy to GMC. (H) TENDULKAR IS PARLIAMENTARY SEC TO PARRIKAR: Sanvordem MLA Vinay Tendulkar was sworn in as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on November 1. (GT) MANDREM'S GARBAGE DISPOSAL: Mandrem Panchayat has constituted a committee for the disposal of Garbage as per section 63 of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act 1994. The Committee, which has people from different walks of life including doctors, advocates, businessmen and elected representatives, met recently to discuss the garbage problem in Mandrem and to chalk out a plan to solve this problem. (GT) CONG URGES CENTRAL ACTION: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho Faleiro apprised Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil about the law and order situation in Goa and appealed to him to initiate necessary action. (H) MUSICIANS OF YESTERYEARS TO PERFORM AT BAINA: In an effort to revive the old memories of the Baina beach, a live musical concert featuring the musicians of yesteryears will be organised on November 21 at the beach. Over 30 musicians, some settled abroad, have decided to perform live. The even titled 'Those Were the Days' will feature The Four seasons, Rolling Beats, Chocolate Highway, Typhoons, Elements and other musicians. Band The Lynx are also slated to perform for the event. "During the last two decades or so, the city of Vasco da Gama has gone through a very lean patch where entertainment activities that were available in the past, have ceased and have almost come to a standstill," a musician stated. (NT) NO SIGN OF FAMILY COURT YET: After 14 years of the enactment of Family Courts Act, the people in Goa are still awaiting the setting up of the requisite legal infrastructure to decide family-related matters even as divorce cases are piling up in courts, adding to the agony of the litigants. (GT) GOLD ORNAMENTS, CASH STOLEN: An unidentified person stole a bag containing cash amounting to Rs.13,000 and gold ornaments valued at Rs.80,000 from a woman, Archana Soman of Sawantwadi. The incident occurred at the KTC bus terminus (in Panaji) while she was waiting to proceed to Mangalore on 16 October. (GT) VPS SHOULD OWN CREMATORIUM, SAYS GOVT: The State government wants all villages in North Goa to have a crematorium of their own. The District Rural Development Agency has written in this regard to all Sarpanchas of North Goa and said that panchayats that have land should set up the crematoriums and those that do not, should acquire land for the purpose. (H) NAVELIM PAYS TRIBUTE TO CARDINAL GRACIAS: The Navelim Village Panchayat celebrated the 104th birth anniversary of late Cardinal Valerian Gracias on 23 October, at Sinquetim. (GT) GOSPEL MUSIC: Crusaders for Jesus with Mary will organise a two-day Gospel Musical Concert at the Holy Spirit Church grounds in Margao on November 3 and 4 at 4 pm. The concert has been put together by leading Catholic singer-musicians from Mumbai, Goa and Sri Lanka. It will include skits, Bible talks, testimonies, worship and infilling sessions, besides live music. (GT) NEW ART GALLERY: A new art gallery called Les Artistes will open on November 4, at 5 pm, at Mico's, Opp Post Office, Candolim, Beach Road. Conceptualised by Mr Reginald D'Souza and Mr Prasad Pankar, the gallery will showcase the talent of promising new artistes as also established ones, in an effort to celebrate both art and the artist. EXHIBITION OF SCULPTURES: 'Recent Sculptures', an exhibition S Sham Sunder, will be opened at the Fundacao Oriente gallery, Fontainhas, Panjim, on November 5 at 6 pm. The exhibition will be on from 4 to 14 November, from 11 am to 8 pm. ALL SOULS DAY: November 2 is being observed as All Souls Day by the Church and all the churches were packed this morning. Surprisingly, even Sundays don't attract such a large congregation as on All Souls Day. Earlier every priest used to say three masses on this day but now things have changed. Moreover, most of the churches do not have any mass in the cemetery as it used to be earlier.
