--------------------------------------------------------- Citizens demand repairs of roads in Navelim --------------------------------------------------------- The villagers of Navelim have complained about the damage caused to the interior roads due to the closure of Rawanfond bridge and have demanded immediate repairs of the same on priority basis.
In a letter addressed to the executive engineer in the public works department (PWD), Fatorda, the convenor of the Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum (NCCF), Mr A Mascarenhas has stated that the diversion of traffic through different narrow roads, due to closure of Rawanfond bridge, has resulted in huge potholes. He said that diversion of traffic from Sanguem, Sanvordem, Curchorem, Quepem, Chandor to Margao has made all the interior roads unsafe for driving as the edges of the roads have been washed away.
Mr Mascarenhas mentioned that the situation becomes more dangerous when the potholes are filled with rainwater. "The badly affected roads include Davorlim (via St Joseph's chapel), Mandopa, Ravora and Rawanfond-Navelim church via Aquem-Baixo," he added.
With the village feast fast approaching, Mr Mascarenhas said that the situation would deteriorate further as thousands of devotees attend the novenas beginning from November 7.
"The daily novenas begin early in the morning, much before daybreak and the last novena concludes after sunset. So it will be dangerous for people, including pedestrians, cyclists and two wheelers to use the damaged roads with the existing condition of street lights and may even claim some lives as happened earlier due to heavy traffic," he added. -------------------------------------------------- The Navhind Times 1/11/04 page 6 ---------------------------------------------------
